Apparently the mountain was quite bare during the Land Wars, when the Fencibles were camping out:

Oh, but then there is a comment on the Auckland Art Gallery site:
“This is NOT Mt Richmond but McLennan Hills from Mt Richmond tuff ring with Mt Wellington in distance. It is reverse of sketch by Kinder in same year which is Mt Richmond from McLennan Hills - note the road and houses in reverse too.”
