East side of Otahuhu Pa, but when could this have been taken? A neighbour who’s lived here for 35 years said there used to be a big pond with frogs near where the Rugby Club car park is - is that what is seen here? Where are all the trees? So many questions. This photo is taken from the Auckland Museum site.
How many quarry sites?
This image is from Maunga Mana, entitled Mt Richmond Geology Stops. In this photo it looks as if there are four quarry sites? (pink arrows)

Beautification in the ‘20s
Tree planting was mentioned in 1929 in the following article from the New Zealand Herald:
The current state of affairs is very interesting. There is widespread growth of olives, and weeds including hawthorn, blackberries, hemlock and Apple of Sodom.
As well as the older, more established specimens including Moreton Bay figs, totara, puriri, karaka, pohutukawa, and magnolia grandiflora.

No trees on the hill?
Apparently the mountain was quite bare during the Land Wars, when the Fencibles were camping out:

Oh, but then there is a comment on the Auckland Art Gallery site:
“This is NOT Mt Richmond but McLennan Hills from Mt Richmond tuff ring with Mt Wellington in distance. It is reverse of sketch by Kinder in same year which is Mt Richmond from McLennan Hills - note the road and houses in reverse too.”

Leaning tower of Otahuhu
Fascinated by the new ‘hood’ and unfamiliar surroundings I sought out A Brief History of Otahuhu (Otahuhu Borough Council, 1982) at the community library and discovered that there once stood the leaning tower of Pisa in our backyard.
