Mellow Birds coffee mug. Found on the Sands End/Hurlingham shore. Mellow Birds was a popular British brand that introduced instant coffee to the UK in the 1970s. It gradually lost favour but was relaunched about ten years ago and has made something of a comeback.
I got an email from a follower in the Yukon Territory of Canada that informed me about the Mudlarks:
The Mudlarks (from Henry Mayhew -- London Labour and the London Poor 1849-50)
'At one of the stairs In the neighbourhood of the Pool, I collected about a dozen of these unfortunate children: there was not one of them over 12 years of age,& many of them were but 6. It would be almost impossible to describe the wretched group, so motley was their appearance, so extraordinary their dress, and so stolid & inexpressive their countenances. Some carried baskets, filled with the produce of their morning's work, and others old tin kettles with iron handles. Some, for want of these articles, had old hats filled with the bones & coals they had picked up,& others, more needy still, had actually taken the caps from their own heads,& filled them with what they had happened to find. 'The muddy slush was dripping from their clothes & utensils, & forming a puddle in which they stood. There did not appear to be among the whole group as many filthy cotton rags to their backs as,when stitched together, would have been sufficient to form the material of one shirt.'
Interesting stuff...
viewer request night!
Returning to Mudlarks, a bizarre little point and click it seems no one knew about. Its good though!

The late, and much missed Geoff Egan, Museum of London Department of Urban Archaeology finds specialist. He put in many hours for free advising Thames Mudlarks before they became fashionable and before (perhaps he was the inspiration for) the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Editor of Post-medieval Archaeology and christened Geoffo Badgerbeard . BTW 2025 will see a Mudlarks exhibition at the London Museum Docklands. Look out for it
