House on Fire by James Marvin Phelps Via Flickr: House on Fire Ruins South Fork Mule Canyon Bears Ears National Monument Utah January 2026 Tucked into a quiet alcove in Mule Canyon, Utah, the House on Fire ruins are one of the most incredible sights in Cedar Mesa. Built by the Ancestral Puebloans between 700 and 2,500 years ago, these small cliffside granaries once stored corn and other staples high above the canyon floor. Around mid-morning, sunlight reflects off the canyon floor and opposite wall onto the overhanging sandstone above the ruins. The reflected light illuminates the streaks in the rock, creating the appearance of flames. It’s a natural lighting effect caused by the sun's angle and the canyon walls.
