Friday Reads May 21
Welcome to Friday Reads for the May Long Weekend in Canada. After a busy week, I am taking the time to reflect and think about the books I am reading.
I actually finished two books this past week, Saints & Misfits by S.K. Ali and A Hero Born by Jin Yong. One is a YA Contemporary, the other is a Wuxia modern classic I read in physical form and as an ebook.
The next book I hope to pick up is The Bohemians by Jasmin Darznik. It is my library book pick of the week. It is the fictional story of real life famed photographer of Depression-era United States Dorothea Lang.
Now, I am ready to get to my next ebook. I downloaded Salt Houses by Hala Alyan a few months ago, and finally getting to it. The book follows various generations of a middle-class Palestinian family as they live through conflicts through the decades. It was published in 2017.
A book I started and would like to continue this week is The Waves by Virginia Woolf. It is a book that is told from the point of view of six individuals, and somehow their stories intertwine. I have read a few books by Virginia Woolf, and would like to continue on with reading as many of her books and writing as possible.
Another book I am returning to after a break is When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. It is also a memoir through which a neurosurgeon detailing his struggle with cancer.
A book that I also started in May is the nonfiction book by Thomas Friedman, about the time he spent in the Middle East in the 1980s. It is called From Beirut to Jerusalem, and can be read as a companion to the second book I mention in this post.
