I went to my first convention in cosplay when I was 14. I too was afraid I´d be alone but…when you´re in cosplay, usually people will run up to you going “oh my god you cosplay [character name] can I have a picture with you??”, and you´ll quickly meet fandom members, take group pictures and exchange blog names and facebook. An iphone cam will be enough. Usually there are professional photographers on cosplay conventions, who will even send you their pictures of you for free! They do that for fun, so don´t be shy around them. You´re not bugging them at all!But one thing about age:If you´re uncomfortable with something, say no! Some cosplayers are perfectly fine with hugging/cuddling/kissing strangers for cute pairing pictures, but some aren´t. Especially when you´re a minor, mention that! It´s hard to tell an age when in costume. This is just an important advice for young cosplayers to avoid awkward moments, since cosplayers can be 14 or 24 and have the same height sometimes (and when you cosplay an older character, every sense of age gets screwed up badly!)And of course you can buy stuff for your cos. I´ve bought so much bullshit just for my cosplays…It´s really helpful! Also some tips:- If you cosplay in public outside a convention, better be not alone. You´re young, take an adult cosplayer with you.- if your cosplay isn´t that good - who cares? You´re a beginner after all. It´s about being creative and having a great time.- DRINK ENOUGH AND EAT ENOUGH! - comfortable shoes. You´ll be on your feet all day. If your character wears comfortable shoes, celebrate that! Only wear those damned high high heels if necessary because you´ll suffer.- you can ask anyone for pics. But ask before you take them. Not only you´ll get great poses, but you can also have nice conversations and get new friends. Also yeah consent and stuff. These are all things I´ve learned in 4 years of cosplaying. Sadly I don´t know how cosplay convetions work in the US, but I think the basics are the same.BUT…..Most importantly, have FUN! :D
