Well, he isn't one-dimensional. He has his redeeming qualities. But I feel like people overuse redeeming qualities when it comes to him. Sure, he's not all bad, but there's way more bad than good.

As for him "actually being good"...I personally don't like that. There are spoilers for my story, so I won't go into the details, but I like to compare his story to CM's story. I'm using initials so you don't look up this guy's story. But the general gist is that he was pretty bad to begin with, it's just that what happened after made him worse.

An example would be that William wasn't exactly the best friend to Henry. He would constantly manipulate Henry to get what he wanted. William's already bad, but some things (that I won't reveal) compel him to take the leap and murder Henry's daughter.
