Piano & a Microphone 1983: Here’s the first posthumous release (Sept 2018) from Prince’s (once private) Paisley Park music vault. It’s a demo cassette that sat untouched for years. He recorded it in a single-take some time in 1983 in his home studio. This is right after 1999, so he’s on top of the music world. It contains 34 minutes of him riffing, stretching his chops, and sketching out ideas—an intimate glimpse into his creative process. There’s such emotion here, you’d think he were performing in front of an audience, not alone in a basement. As much pleasure as I get from listening to this gem (over and over), I’m quite confident your Royal Badness wouldn’t have wanted this stuff put out for public consumption.
