Final Music Video and Evaluation 

I used a mixture of techniques for my final video project, including, basic filming, a graphic equaliser and frame-by-frame line drawing. 

The basic filming gave me mixed opinions. Some of it looked effective and some of it looked random and unrelated. Adding a variety of effects over the top of this footage, such as Noise and a Black-and-White tint did definitely improve the overall look of the footage. But my main issue was quantity. As despite filming over 7minutes of footage, after editing, I felt I only had 1-2minutes of suitable footage. This then left me with gaps. Which I then replaced with other footage. However, to give this an original feel, I added the Line Drawing technique over the top. After many hours and days doing the frame-by-frame footage I was able to complete the footage for a vast amount of the video. Luckily, I had access to iCAD which with pen tools made doing the line drawing significantly easier. 

The issue I then had with this was that after I imported the lines over the footage, the lines appeared blurred. So I gave them a glow and used many sharpening tools to get them to more reasonable lines. If I was doing this in the future I would ensure that there wasn't any blurriness or anything to correct. As in some places, I think the glow and line sharpening tools do not look as effective. 

The graphic equaliser boarder however is an aspect I am happy with, as it works really well with the dinging sounds at the beginning and end and gives the simple but precise look I was hoping for. 

The only other issue, is the issue with sound. As somepoints the sound became tinny and the volume control changed, this is a problem I couldn't resolve as I inputted it, into after effects several times. Next time, I will look at a different output mode to try and correct the music, as the 3 that I tried did not resolve the issue. 

Overall my audience response from the video was not bad, and in much agreement with my own statements. Saying that, the music and quality of the line drawing could have been improved but other than that the style and music genre was well received. 

If I was to do this project again, I would allow myself more time to correct errors made in filming etc and would also look at alternative genres and techniques to creating a music video as there is still many styles and production forms which I have not tried, but would like to.

Rotascoping Attempt

Like the line drawing, this is another very tedious and time consuming technique. But also like the line drawing, the finished outcome can look very effective. Here I found that not all of the footage came out as strong as I would have liked and therefore a lot of shapes are missed here. To help counteract this, I tried to sharpen and add effects to each image which made it stronger than what was there originally. I then added a ramp to give the backgorund more depth. Overall, the idea I think is decent, however, my execution this time could have been better.

Steve Barron Research: 

Steve Barron, has worked as a film director, film producer and music video director. He is best known for directing the film ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ in addition to the music videos for a-ha’s ‘Take on Me’ and Michael Jackson’s, Billie Jean as well as many other famous titles for Madonna and Nat King Cole over his career. Resulting in him being presented with an ‘Outstanding Achievement in Music Videos’ award at the Hammersmith Palais in London in 2007. 

Barron directed 7 of A-Ha’s music videos. The ‘Take on Me’ video, was, in my eyes the most eye-catching and probably one of the best attempts at rotascoping in a music video that I have seen. The contrast with the sketchy simplistic newspaper style drawing and the traditional footage makes the video unique. It also helped influence our Rotascoping and our line design piece. I tried to imitate the continual motion and energy that was created by doing the frame-by-frame animation. 

Micheal Jacksons, Billie Jean was also another iconic music video of the period, created by Barron. The video, has a comical narrative story running throughout, creating a lighthearted, lovable video. In addition to the lit pavement steps beneath Jacksons feet creating a memorable motif for the music video.

Stop Motion Task 

My original attempt at Stop motion was very unsuccessful, as a result, I think, the song was to fast paced and therefore the words became blurred. However, I think this style of music video editing does require upbeat/ cheery music to match the quickly changing frame-by-frame footage. Again, like the last attempt, I ran into some errors when alining the footage to the audio. As it is incredibly difficult to match every frame with an appropriate sound as it is unnatural to film, and I found myself speaking the lines much quicker than the song. To try and correct this, I included parts from the original footage to break up the sentences a little bit. This has made the footage look slightly more realistic but there is still marginal error.

Colour Isolation Task 

Like many of the other techniques i've studied over the course of the project, I think that this is a fair technique to use in conjunction with others. I think solely it can get a bit boring as the focus so specific throughout the footage. However, I think it does give an interesting and direct narrative as to why particular items have been selected to stand out.

Chris Cunningham Research 

Chris Cunningham is a British video artist who in 1997 made his directorial debut with the music video ‘Come to Daddy’ by the Aphex Twins. Since this, he has gone on to make lots more music videos for the Aphex Twins and despite primarily directing music videos for ambient music and electronia genres. He has also created art installations, directed short movies and album artwork for a variety of different artists. Including Madonnas ‘Frozen’ music video, which was voted 22 in Slants Magazine top-100 music videos. In addition to the multiple awards that he has won, including an MTV music video award for Breakthrough Video and a Grammy nomination for Best Short Form Music Video for Bjork’s ‘All Is Full of Love’.   

His videos for the Aphex Twins are very unique and are marketed towards a very particular audience due to their weird narrative running beside the songs, channeling alien and potentially satanic themes. However, this does lend it towards the irritate style of music so it works well with the song in some respects, even if it is not my particular taste. Even with the more mainstream artist Madonna’s music video, Cunningham creates a very dark atmosphere with the blackness and the crow like motifs. Again, it works well with the song as the song is fairly dark, however, it is not to my particular taste.

Lyric Music Video 

A different, modern simple but effective take on a music video. Adding lyrics is a relatively easy procedure and I think with the right song can look effective. I would say, that this is a fairly genre specific style of creating a music video, as I feel this style would not suit all genres, but for an upbeat, cool video like this one, I think it works effectively.
