In Xi'an, crickets are a thing. You can buy crickets in the Muslim Quarter, in straw or neon green plastic cages. If you want to upgrade their accomodations, you can purchase a bamboo cage. Their chirping is loud and pleasant like a hot summer night in the countryside. But you have to wonder, what is the point of keeping a cricket in a cafe for a few days of pleasure before it dies. Unless you know how to feed a cricket. The vendor let's the crickets do the talking as he watches videos on his phone. We left the city through Damascus Gate and caught a cab back to the hotel after 16,000 steps, 6.8 miles, and 92 minutes of exercise. Not a bad end to the first week in Israel.
