放置した株にできた種が飛び、畝でない辺鄙なところで勝手に成長していたりするのはカラシナが多い。写真も防獣柵手前の施肥もなく栄養も乏しい粘土質土壌の上で、他の雑草もろくに生えない中、悠々と葉を広げて育っているのが興味深い。勿論柵の外に飛んでたらこんなに育つ前に鹿の餌食になっていただろう。まあ、柵の内側でも私の餌食になるから結果同じようなものだけど（笑）。

カラシナと言ってもいろいろ種類があり、特にサラダ用のものを育てたわけではないが、葉裏の毛はさほど多くなく、炒め物や浅漬けはもちろん生食にも抵抗はない。写真はトーストにカラシナとレタス、マヨネーズをはさんだサンドウィッチ。名前のごとく種子はカラシやマスタードの原料だから、葉にも適度な辛さがあり、張りも良い食感を生んで食べ応えがある（嬉）。
