the gojo clan and conformity to major influence rant - because it would've surpassed the post-notes character limit :')

if you've studied psychology at any level, understanding why the gojo clan wear masks is easier when you take social influence into account, in particular: conformity.

the level of conformity to major influence (a group) is affected by a few social factors. one is group size, where the higher the number of individuals in the group means conformity is stronger, and another is anonymity.

when individuals attend any event, a protest, a riot, (large group size) that requires their face to be covered (anonymity) so they can't be identified and singled out by authorities, they lose their individuality and their thoughts and actions begin to 'conform' to the thoughts and actions of the group. if one individual in the group starts throwing shit, most will join in as any responsibility for the shit-throwing can't be placed on one person alone.

as the main house that receives gojo satoru, one can imagine the chiba sect of the gojo clan is quite large. I'd give them a minimum of 100 members. (large group size)

and as heavily emphasised, everyone covers their face with masks from kabuki and nō theatre, yōkai myth, the works. (anonymity) additionally, when itona speaks to satoru, she does not use 'i' to refer to herself, she uses 'we'/'our'/'us' to enforce a collective. the only time she has used 'i' is while winding up naobito. this rule goes for every gojo clansman.

if, in a protest or a riot, an individual decided 'hey, no, I don't like what we're doing here', they would leave the group... and go home, probably lmfao. if that individual's face covering was taken or lost, they would be also forced to leave or even go to jail because they've been identified and singled out by authorities.

if a clansman decided 'hey, no, I don't like what we're doing here' with satoru or the clan, they would leave, either to go to another sect or leave the clan entirely. if a clansman's mask is removed and satoru sees their face, they are also forced to leave, or they are straight-up killed because they've been identified and singled out.

this brings us to the primary reason for the masks: avoiding satoru becoming partial. here's a long shitty metaphor. ignore the innuendoes.

imagine you have a sword. this sword can cut planets in half if you wielded it in such a direction. the sword belongs to everyone in your family, because you all came together and killed the two people who forged it, so that you all get to hold and use the sword too. it doesn't matter to you that the sword will never know the warmth of its creators' hands. you all realise that it's possible the sword might grow to prefer the hands of a particular family member and prefer to be wielded by them, automatically gravitating to their hold. so everyone wears gloves so the sword can't feel them. the sword knows the hands are different in size and strength, but it can't truly identify any of you though the fabric.

and though satoru can quite literally see through the masks and know their facial structure (knows the hands are different in size and strength), they give that miniscule bit of plausible deniability for the clansmen to be able to say 'haha. you dont know me <3' if he tried to single them out. they also give the very loud message of 'don't even bother.'

in terms of dispositional factors affecting conformity, there's expertise.

in an emergency situation (let's say a person fainted in public), if someone on the scene has a special expertise (let's say a nurse) they are less likely to conform (the nurse is more likely to help because of their expertise in health, instead of standing by and watching like most of the general public). so more expertise = less conformity, dependent on the situation at hand.

the gojo clan members swap jobs every week. as naobito says, they are jack of all trades, masters of none. (expertise. equal amount of it in the same things.)

thus, barring personality, it's likely they would behave the same in any drastic scenario. that, combined with the social factors of conformity, makes the very foundations of how the chiba sect works. if they did not think as a group and act as a group, the infighting would be crazy, and so the use of masks is almost as much for their sake as it is for satoru's.

and of course, the anomaly. kazuha.

with her lack of physical gojo traits and uniform (dark hair, not pale as a sheet, red clothing), the same job and high level of expertise in it (master-at-arms), the same unchanging mask (oni), she is easily identifiable to satoru (and for this reason, she is often mentally referred to by name instead of her job title when it's satoru's POV. e.g. itona is called 'the retainer' in satoru's povs instead of her own name, with exceptions for when a point is being made about her ambiguous identity)

kazuha being identifiable is excused by the rest of the clan as she does not wield the sword, she only protects it, removes its rust and sharpens it, a.k.a tasks the gojos are not specialised in, and she still wears the gloves (masked) to be one of them.

she is also the only gojo clan member who, when talking to satoru, uses 'i'/'me' instead of solely 'we'.
