BRENDA: DREAMER. KNITTER. COFFEE DRINKER. AUNTIE. I want a church where a survivor like me can worship without fear…. I want a church where a survivor like me can fellowship without being objectified ... just for being alive in this body. Please—let me just “be"; I want to just be. I don’t want to be judged for and by this shell that your book says doesn’t matter…..judged for its sexuality, for its perfect imperfections, for its glorious size. Please. Make it not matter.
CASEY: FLAMBOYANT, JOYFUL, EMPATHETIC, SIMPLE, PROUD I want a church where a queer, flamboyant person like me can walk into the room and not need an explanation for myself. A place where no one needs a label to understand me. A place where I don't fear the plague of toxic masculinity. A place where I do not feel judged for being a feminine man. I don't need someone giving me speeches about their own interpretation of verses from a book. I would like a place to discuss ideas and morals and what makes people good.
MATTHEW B: STILL LEARNING WHO I AM I want a church where a passionate young man like me can hear a sermon that speaks on current social issues: racism, sexism, government, and helps us deal with these very non-isolated incidences.
KRISTIN: LOVES COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES I need a church where someone like me who has never understood (non-computing) binary distinctions can come together with others who believe in the power of opening beliefs to learning, loving understanding and creative purpose.
DANNI: PAGAN, PRAGMATIC, COLD-BLOODED, SURVIVORIST, PERSISTANT I want a church where a non-christian like me isn’t bored silly.
JASON: JEW, FOODIE, KIDS, WINE LOVE I want a church where a a Jew like me can participate in the community and with my friends or even volunteer with and not be proselytized.
i want a church where a doubting, skeptical, traumatized-by-the-church polyamorous queer, like me, can wrestle, explore, question and most importantly find social justice driven community that is curious rather than judgmental, interested in growth and learning over evangelism/converting others, emphasizes relationships over rightness, and offers support to movements led by those most impacted by oppression rather than extending charity.
MARCI: FUNNY, OUTGOING, PROTECTIVE, OUTSPOKEN, CARING I want a church where a bisexual Latina like me can feel important.
