Repost from @fitfix88 - 🐭 Anterior Pelvic Tilt 🐭 - 🚨Anterior pelvic tilt is misunderstood - 📌It's NOT a diagnosis 📌It's NOT abnormal 📌It doesn't NEED to be FIXED or CORRECTED (yet in some cases it can be better CONTROLLED) - ⁉️So what is it? - 📌It's just a way to describe the position the pelvis is in or is moving into, similar to any other body part (e.g. "flexed knee" or "extended knee") 📌It's also coupled with lumbar spine extension, hip flexion, and hip internal rotation (since the hips and spine attach to the pelvis) - 🤓Quick Kinesiology lesson: - 💪 Muscles contributing to ANTERIOR tilt: 📌Hip flexors (iliopsoas, rectus femoris, tensor fascia latae, sartorius) 📌Lats 📌Erector spinae 📌Quadratus Lumborum - 💪 Muscles contributing to POSTERIOR tilt: 📌Gluteus maximus 📌Hamstrings 📌Abdominals (rectus abdominis, external/internal obliques) - 📚For most people (85% of males and 75% of females in one study), having the pelvis in anterior tilt is the "normal" position for them. Some will even hold the pelvis in a posterior tilted position most of the time. - ⁉️So why all of the "Fix Anterior Tilt" articles, videos, programs, etc online? Because: - 1) Many health professionals were taught that things are "black and white", "bad" or "good". That's not the case. Every situation is DIFFERENT depending on the INDIVIDUAL person - 2) It's easy to sell. If you've always been told that "Your anterior pelvic tilt is why you have back pain, and it needs to be fixed", then of course you'll want to fix it with whatever program you find - 💯Here's the truth: 📌Anterior pelvic tilt is NORMAL. Saying that it's "bad" is the same as saying bending your knee is "bad"...it just doesn't make sense 📌However, in SOME people, having poor control of this position (or poor control of how to move OUT of this position) can contribute to low back irritation 📌In others it can actually HELP RELIEVE low back irritation! - 🚨This is why cookie-cutter programs don't work well in rehab.
