Hey there- I just got wind of some rumor of transmisogyny related to my old band, Schmekel. I just wanted to let you know that the lyric in question is for a song off our first album titled "I <3 Str8 Men Butt Not 4 Sex", which is about transphobic straight cis-men on Craigslist: "I just got your creepy email/You say you're looking for a she-male/I am really vexed/I love straight men, but not for sex!" I recommend checking context first before jumping on a call-out bandwagon. - Simcha
When I was approached with “Schmekel uses transmisogynistic lyrics”, I asked the sender of this information to clarify “where?” as I was actively avoiding “jumping on a call-out bandwagon”.
The sender clarified the song is "I <3 Str8 Men Butt Not 4 Sex", as you noted, which I posted so that those interested in the context can listen to the song themselves and make a judgement call on whether or not they believe the usage of slur was justified to their own personal beliefs.
But regardless of context, the song contains transmisogynistic slurs which either may upset some viewers — either because they do not want to consume that type of media, or because of their lived circumstances. Some trans and non-binary individuals may find it acceptable for them to consume this media, but others may not want to; and in accordance, I confirmed what the sender said (about transmisogynistic slurs) while keeping posts about your old band Schmekel up for those that enjoy it. I did not voice my own opinion, because I trust the individuals who follow this blog can find the song themselves and take into account what others have been saying to form their own opinion and don’t need me to say it.
I don’t think the tone you’ve approached in, saying that acknowledging the concerns of the followers of this blog is somehow “jumping on a call-out bandwagon”, is founded. I did not create any “call-out” posts, nor did I participate in a “rumor” by confirming the song DOES utilize slurs.
