Good morning (or evening, or afternoon), everyone. I’ll preface this by clarifying that this is not an April Fish joke. I’m new here, and I can’t seem to come up with a name for myself, so I’ve decided to crowdsource. I am open to any and all suggestions; no gender preference.

okay so re: my tags on that post where i say the only time we see collie actually afraid for his life is the hill scene - my collie take? i think collie was fairly confident he could win the walk, and that he was right about that. however ☝️ this does not mean he wasn't taking constant psychological damage, just that his was less focused on "oh fuck i might die here" and more on empathising "too much" with the other walkers. the walk became unbearable for collie because of the violence he had to witness, and him starting to fully understand that him surviving (which he thinks he can do) means that he has to let this violence continue.

i think it's a bit too complicated to just lump collie in as one of the walkers who died because they mentally couldn't handle the walk when they physically could, because i think that disregards the fact that collie knew exactly what he was doing when he ran unarmed up to a tank with two armed soldiers sitting on it. collie understood that he MIGHT die doing this, but unlike with olson - who i think we can easily interpret as grabbing the carbine halfheartedly as a way to just end his walk, since his body was continuing to walk without his mind's consent (he wasn't going to get his ticket through warnings, so he had to break the rules) - collie's primary intention when grabbing that gun was NOT to die, he had just accepted being killed as a risk he was willing to take.

if we want to really get into this and maybe have some fun, i think we could interpret collie's "who am i going to see between now and the end" speech as coming just after he's realised that even though he COULD win the long walk, he knows he's probably not going to let himself win it. i think at some point collie realised that he wouldn't be able to stomach being the winner of the long walk if it meant every other boy he started the walk with is killed. collie has very intense emotional reactions to what the walkers around him are going through (ex. tank scene, ray seeing his mom), but we only see him afraid for his life once. there's no way we can reasonably interpret collie's "fuck this" and trying to rebel as being out of a "if i'm going to die, i'm going to die fighting" mentality because tbh, collie was doing better than most of them at that point and again, did not seem to believe he was going to be killed just by walking. the only other interpretation i can get from it is that collie is saying fuck the entire premise of this, yes i can win this but i refuse to. it's similar to how he kills himself i guess, he understands what's going on (he can outlast the others, he is going to die) but he refuses to let it happen on the major's terms. he's not going to outlast the others because he doesn't want to, he accepts that he's either going to free them all or die trying. so i think when he's crying to ray about how he won't see his family, it's because at this point he's realised that he can't let himself beat everyone, because he can't stomach letting the walk play out even if it kills him - he's either going to get them out of it and be a fugitive, or get killed. either way he won't see his family again

one more thing about modern aus is that they'll go on about enjolras giving these long inspiring speeches for the majority of the vague meetings about the undefined cause which is so. in the books he is not on the stage preaching to everyone during most of the pre-barricade scenes. like its kind of made a point that he is either having actual conversations or just listening to what everyone else is saying. like yes he does give orders and instructions that he'll pre-face with a little speech but like. normally he's listening to others opinions before giving his own two cents. i think sometimes people just see the word leader and they can't imagine a version of that that isn't someone else forcing their thoughts and will onto a group of people.
