Nancy McNally really is the BEST person they could have written in to have this conversation with Sam for so many reasons. She handles him so well. She stays so calm and on top of everything while he is getting so worked up and loud and frustrated because she was fully expecting him to react this way, of course he would react this way, and she knows how to deal with that. She's dealt with a dozen Sams today, and a lot worse than him.

The way she has the file on hand already, prepared for him to read, but only puts it on the table when he demands it. The way she talks to him so honestly and with no real accusation, gaining his trust so easily until he goes from that loud "that's CRAP" to this really quiet and almost reverent "of course" when she asks if he trusts her.

Kate— I’ve had her as a lesbian longer than CJ (I originally headcanoned CJ as bi back before I knew I was a lesbian) and I think I’ve still gotta stick with it even though people have tried very hard to convince me she’s into men

Andy— I think Andy’s pan, I like to think she had a very active dating life in college, and I’m very strongly on the non-binary/genderqueer/gnc Andy agenda

Donna— That’s my bisexual queen! I’m not the biggest Donna/Josh shipper in the world (read: I like them together as an idea up until about mid-Season 6, and by the time they’re actually together I just don’t think they should’ve been) but I but I think they can be good but I also am a big fan of Donna/Amy and Donna/CJ. I think she realised it later in life (I wanna say campaign-era) but she’s pretty comfortable with it now

Amy— That is a lesbian with a lot of comphet issues. I fear I think that if most of Josh’s exes (listen, Mandy is Mandy, but I just think… gay?) which might just have something to do with their terrible taste in men (I love Josh he is the most me-like character in that show; hence…)

Nancy— After Kate, she is the one I’ve put most thought into, and I still wanna say lesbian. A fairly fem lesbian, but nonetheless. I had, at one point, a whole backstory drafted for her, but I’ve yet to do anything with it… if I can still find it, maybe I’ll go into all of it more, but I think she was fairly out with the guys in the military once she was comfortable enough with them. They treated her like one of the guys, so she felt she could do the same, if that makes sense? I don’t think she would’ve ever been comfortable enough for Jed or Leo to know, though.

Toby— I had a friend in high school whose favourite character was Toby and his headcanons kind of influenced my headcanons SO. To me, Toby is transmasc aroace bisexual. There are other headcanons I’ll accept (technically, he didn’t hc him as aroace, that was all me, and I’ve seen headcanons of him being gay that I’m okay with) but it’s very important to be that Toby is Not Straight (I also had a lot of friends absolutely convinced he was the straightest one in the group and I cannot understand that one. If I were to pick one character to label cishet it would be Charlie, but he’s a fantastic ally.) I’m also, again, very strong on the trans Toby thing, I have a lot of fun headcanons about how Huck and Molly came to be (depending on the day I also headcanon Andy as transfem which gives me even more ways) and I just like that headcanon.

“What do you do down there, anyway?”

Nancy tenses, biting into a bready sort of hors d’oeuvre to conceal her displeasure at being cornered by the First Lady once again. This is the third time tonight Abbey Bartlet has surprised her as she attempts to return to the party, some overdressed version of a cocktail party being thrown for a name Nancy doesn’t recognize.

“I advise,” she says flatly.

“And the President listens?” The First Lady arches an eyebrow, looking skeptical of the concept.

Not tonight, Nancy thinks. “One thing I appreciate about working with President Bartlet is his grasp on how much he doesn’t know, in some regards,” she says, keeping her tone polite. “It’s an honor to be in the room, and to give advice. Once I give it, well.” She shrugs, popping the last bite of appetizer in her mouth. She’s had better garlic knots from Little Caesars. “He can take it or leave it.”
