Si tratterà della prima missione a partire da suolo americano, su un razzo americano e con equipaggio americano dal lontano luglio 2011, quando lo space shuttle Atlantis si fermò sulla pista di atterraggio del Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. Protagonisti del volo saranno due veterani del corpo astronauti NASA, Robert “Bob” Behnken e Douglas “Doug” Hurley.
