Natalie Bird, a member of the Liberal Democrats (Lib Dems) since 2015, was barred in November 2019 from running for Parliament because she wore a t-shirt to a Lib Dems meeting that said “Woman: Adult Human Female”. Bird also received a reprimand for allegedly “speaking to a journalist”, an alleged breach of confidentiality. She is appealing these findings. Bird has now also launched a legal action against the party for discrimination under the Equality Act 2010.

Bird, a mother of two who escaped from an abusive partner, first faced accusations of ‘transphobia’ in 2018 for raising concerns about how the rights of vulnerable women would be negatively impacted under policies allowing males to access women’s refuges. The complaint was allegedly made by Zoe O’Connell, a male who currently identifies as a woman – though O’Connell has denied any knowledge of that case or of being the accuser.

While the grievance was formally dismissed by the Lib Dems in August 2018, Bird lost her position as chairwoman of the Radical Association, along with a number of other internal roles. Bird told The Times:

After Bird’s appearance at the November 2019 meeting wearing the “woman” t-shirt, a second probe was opened over accusations that she was “disseminating transphobic material over a prolonged time”. Bird’s legal action follows the recent ruling in Maya Forstater’s case, that those who hold and express ‘gender critical’ beliefs are protected from discrimination.

my roommate ran us in a World of Darkness one-shot last night- i retrofitted Bird-Eater (now Natalie Bird) as a small town detective tryna solve a recent string of missing person cases.

Spoilers! They were being pied piper'd away by scary sand monsters. We saved the day and she's earned a nap.
