#1740 - Hardenbergia comptoniana - Native Wisteria

AKA native lilac, wild sarsaparilla and wild wisteria climber

Originally described as Glycine comptoniana, after the Lady Northampton in whose garden a specimen had flowered (her surname was Compton). It was given its current name in 1837 by George Bentham, with Hardenbergia deriving from Franziska, Countess von Hardenberg (sister of Baron von Huegel - who had a bunch of species named after himself, as well, after he introduced a range of Australian plants to European public gardens).

This Hardenbergia is a hardy climber, hanging vine, or ground cover, flowering profusely from August to November, although it cheerfully strangles large trees all year round. It is found on sand dunes and sand plains, and in open forest, on sand- or clay-based soils, over large parts of WA.
