Hey, so I saw your SUF posts and saw that you’re a EFL teacher. I’m a native English speaker and I just applied to a program to teach English in Japan, but would you be willing to tell me about your experience as a teacher there? I may also get placed out in the boonies because I have relatively decent Japanese (some applicants for the program have none) and the time I spent in Japan was mainly in cities (study abroad). If you don’t want to talk for whatever reason, no worries!
In my personal experience being able to speak Japanese is absolutely not a factor in placement (if you’re talking about the JET Program, which I presume is the case given that you have no idea where you’re going lol).
Actually, from what I’ve heard and seen so far - having a driver’s license is WAY more of a factor in getting placed in the middle of nowhere, because most of the time, you will need to be able to drive to get around. Conversely, larger cities actually DON’T want to bother with car stuff for their foreign workers and prefer people who won’t/can’t drive.
(Obligatory ESID disclaimer.)
I’ve actually talked about my life in Japan quite a bit, I think? I recommend checking out the #japan tag on this blog. Overall I’m down to answer any specific questions but given my terrible tendency to over-share if I start writing, I may well be here until the novel of my life is finished.
