Morning, Sunshine

Early mornings are his favorite. Years of military service trained his body to wake up early, although Bryan’s managed to hone it to 5:00 AM. So, there he is, pulling on sweats and a t-shirt along with shoes before making his way to the lobby. It’s empty save for a skeleton staff just setting out breakfast, and he gives them perfunctory smiles as he passes. Bryan grabs himself a plate full of eggs, toast, and bacon, followed by a strong cup of coffee, and eats at one of the small tables scattered in the room.

By the time he’s had his fill, it’s pushing on six, so Bryan cleans up and grabs Finola some food and a coffee, making sure to add creamer and one packet of sweetener—just the way she likes it. A couple minutes later finds him knocking on the adjoining door of their hotel rooms.

A groggy Finola greets him with a smile on her face, wearing a rumpled look similar to his. “Morning, sunshine,” he jokes, handing his partner her food and coffee. “Thought I’d bring you something to eat since I was already in the lobby. Sleep well?”

“Well enough,” she replies, taking a sip of her coffee on the way to the small table opposite the bed. Finola tucks her hair behind her ear, having taken it out of her usual updo before sleeping.

It takes everything in Bryan not to follow her and cup her cheeks and kiss her. Morning Finola is one of his favorites—and, if he’s honest, she is the reason why he likes mornings on the road so much.

“Bryan?” She’s looking at him with concern, nearly at her walk over and wave a hand in front of his face stage. (He can get distracted looking at her—a lot.)

“Yeah?”

“I asked if you’re gonna take a shower or just stand in the doorway all day,” Finola says, a smirk on her face. “I think your hair’s getting a little greasy.”

“Ah,” he says, touching his hair to play along as she takes a bite out of her bagel. “Maybe you’re right! Must’ve been the bacon grease.”

“I’m always right.” She grins, covering her mouth with a hand.

I love you. He has yet to say it, but he’s got a feeling Finola’s aware, regardless. Bryan’s not exactly subtle, he knows. She also hasn’t been unresponsive. He’s mindlessly made his way to his bathroom and doesn’t come back to himself until he steps into the shower.

He hopes no one separates them. Finding someone who complements you so well is hard to find. Finola’s heart being on her sleeve would be at odds with her detailed scientific mind to most people, but to him, it’s not. He’s proud of himself for that—mainly because she went out of her way to convey her appreciation.

Their policy is honesty, and they try to be honest, with much success. But this is one thing that neither of them have admitted for fear that it’ll upset the delicate balance of their lives—and it’s eating away at them. Bryan doesn’t know how to word what he observes, let alone feels. It’s why he goes to Finola whenever he struggles with finding a word for their reports (they take turns, now). It’s also why he hasn’t told her yet. Just, I love you, doesn’t feel like enough.

How would he tell her that he wants to share a bed with her just so that her sleepy smiles are the first thing he sees when he wakes up? How would he word wanting to shower with her because her laughter ringing in the bathroom would make his heart sing? How would he say that he wants to help her do her hair in the morning because she combed her fingers through his hair that one time he got food poisoning while holding a cold, damp cloth to his forehead and he wants to return the gesture?

There’s five stages of grief, but Bryan’s learned that you grieve for a lot of things you wouldn’t think. Grieving, he’s learned, doesn’t mean that you’ve lost something you held especially dear—it means that something’s changed, and it takes time to get used to that change. He’s gone through denial: closing off from Finola, keeping secrets from her—all because he wasn’t ready to accept that she’s a part of his life. He’s been angry—he works well without a partner—but never voiced it. He bargained: it was just a test run of how MI6 and the CIA would work for a month, and then it would’ve been over had it not worked out.

Bryan skipped depression and headed to acceptance. He hadn’t been particularly attached to his previously-lonely life, after all. Acceptance seems like such an inadequate word, though. Finola will have a better word for it.

Once they’re on the road, he asks her. “What’s a good word to replace acceptance. Like, something better. Like, you’re not just accepting it, you like the thing, too.”

“Well, uh,” Finola starts, “there’s approving, embracing—”

“Embracing! That’s what I was looking for.” Bryan embraced her presence in his life, and now he can’t imagine her not being in it. Her eyes are on the road as she drives, but his are on her. They arrive at their destination and she parks the car. “Finola...” he murmurs, and belatedly realizes that he’s gazing again.

Strangely, he doesn’t care. “Yeah?” she responds, looking at him.

Bryan leans over the center console and kisses her. Finola’s lips are soft and warm and he can still taste a bit of her minty toothpaste when she opens up to him. She moans something that sounds a bit like his name, but it’s too muffled to tell. Bryan forgets about it when she slings her arms over his shoulders, one hand going into his hair.

They pull away for air, suddenly, chests heaving. Finola’s lips twitch as they gaze at each other, itching to bloom into a flower. He grins at her and she grins back, laughing a little. “Bryan,” she whispers, still out of breath.

“Finola.” One of his hands finds hers congruously.

Bryan’s never been good with words, but sometimes, they aren’t needed. And, indeed, mornings are his favorite time of day. Finola’s post-kiss grins are even better than her sleepy smiles.

I'll update this post for descriptions behind each song, but I figured I'd get it out there now.

1# Gimme Shelter- Rolling Stones

I chose this song first as it takes place after Bryan's first tour. He is experiencing the disillusionment of war and this is about where we see him in episode 11.

#2 Bennie and the Jets - Elton John

This is when Bryan meets Asalah. I also liked this song because it is about the superficiality of the music industry. At the same time it can work as a way to demonstrate how Bryan feels superficial with his role in the world. He has been battered by his tutors in Afganistan and can only see himself as a soldier and a stranger in these lands.

#3 Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley

This obviously after Asalah's death. I don't imagine Bryan's stay to be so peachy as Elvis's song, but I also don't suppose Bryan likes to really think much of his time in prison. He would rather gloss over it, and dance around his experience. The flippant nature of this song signifies this desire to change the subject and forget.

#4 Hurt- Johnny Cash

I'm not too sure if Bryan is a Cash man. He likes Elvis so why not! Hurt is the lowest that Bryan has felt. He is near hopeless and is full of regret and sorrow for the death of Asalah. The last lines of the song signify how Maddox reached out his hand and saved Bryan from his lifetime of Hurt.

#5 Rocket Man - Elton John

To me, Rocket Man is a song about isolation. Bryan, despite having a new chance at life feels quite alone. I am reminded of the remark he makes in the pilot, how Finola is the first person to see him as a human in a long time. Before meeting her, for Bryan, being a rocket man was just a 9 to 5.

#6 Superstition- Stevie Wonder

Speaking about Finola... I figure I would change the genre for her entry. Finola is like no one Bryan has met previously. She is curious and believes that the debris is here for a reason. Bryan can't wrap his head around her reasoning, and yet there is something that draws him to this new partnership.

#7 Tv Dinners - ZZ Top

It wouldn't be a Bryan playlist without food would it? His appetite and iron stomach have no match, whether it be three-week-old sandwiches or chicken with blue sauce, the man will eat it all.

#8 Cotton Candy Land - Elvis Presley

Another food song? Well, you always gotta save room for dessert, and Bryan Beneventi has a massive sweet tooth. I couldn't pass up this song by the King, just as Bryan can't pass up second helpings.

#9 Stuck In The Middle With You - Stealers Wheel

This is where Bryan realizes that he and Finola are being played and makes the decision to save George Jones. Bryan realizes that Finola is the one and only person he can put his trust in. Life is getting harder, but he'd rather be stuck in the middle with no one else other than Finola Jones.

#10 Take Me To The Pilot- Elton John

This song and the next take place during "Do You Know Icarus" Bryan is still dealing with his betrayal to Maddox, but it is overshadowed by a new problem. He is far-flung into a reality that he does not belong in, and he is trying to find a way back home. Like the nonsensical lyrics of this song, Bryan can't make heads or tails of his situation.

#11 Wish You Were Here- Pink Floyd

"You."

Bryan has lost Finola, his partner, his friend, and his anchor. He is scared and alone and realizes just how lonely he is without Finola. It is as if a part of his soul has been taken from him, but it took until now to realize that she made such a difference in his life.

#12 Fire and Rain - James Taylor

This is the second half of the two-parter. Despite all odds and his prior hardships, Bryan just is beginning to have hope. A hope that stems from the wonderment and the force of personality that is Finola. He had hope that his partner, despite not meeting him in this reality, would solve the problem and that he would see her again.

#13 Space Oddity- David Bowie

This song encompasses both Asalah and A Message From Ground Control. Bryan is has been enlightened by the Ball of Light. This freeing experience has left him with a sort of peace and acceptance that he has been denying himself. He believes for the first time and is awash in a new sense of being. In Space Oddity, Major Tom floats away from Earth, he accepts his fate. Byan accepts that the Debris has a bigger plan, and despite feeling so alone from the events of Asalah, he reaches out a hand and takes a chance.

#14 Who Are You - The Who

The finale left us with many questions. Hopefully one day we will get them answered. Maybe not? Bryan was probably left thinking the same thing we were about Otto "Who the fuck are you?"

Regardless it was a fun ride, and I am thankful for this show because it inspired me to do something fun and creative.

Debris S01E09: Do You Know Icarus?

So.... That was the Fringiest episode yet.

1) A guy accidentally erases his twin sister from existence. Just like Peter Bishop was at the final episode of season 3 and through the first 4 episodes of season 4...

2) Guy tries to jump back in time to reset the reality and bring his sister back. Much like Alistair Peck trying to save his fiancée at Fringe S02E18: White Tulip.

3) Turns out those jumps are destroying the universe, much like Walter opening the portal to the Redverse to save Peter... And he doesn’t seem to care as he would do everything to save his sister, just like Walter would for Peter.

4) Images from alternate realities leak into this reality. Much like what Olivia saw on Fringe S01E19: The Road Not Taken, and to the old lady in Fringe S03E14: 6B.

Also, on this episode, there are many actors that were actually on Fringe.

Zak Santiago, who plays Gary Garcia, was Cecil, the man stuck inside the pocket universe in Fringe S05E06: Through the Looking Glass and What Walter Found there.

Keenan Tracy, who plays Shelby, played the role of Nate, in Fringe S03E21: The Last Sam Weiss.

Byron Noble, who plays Niels, was Jackie Bermudez in Fringe S03E11: Reciprocity. 

Adrian Neblett, who plays Vincent, was a cab driver in Fringe S04E18: The Consultant. 

Jennifer Mawhinney, who plays Maddox assistant, was an EMT in Fringe S03E04: Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?
