On June 21, 2015, the world lost a great artist and visionary leader, one who will be sorely missed. Gunther Schuller was my lifelong mentor and teacher, and one of my best friends. He was a performer, composer, conductor, writer, publisher, improviser, educator, administrator and avid listener and concertgoer. Gunther Schuller was truly the compleat musician.
Twenty-five-year-old Cuban-American cellist Thomas Mesa ’08 Prep is the first place winner in the Senior Division of the Sphinx Competition, held in February. At New England Conservatory, Mesa studied cello with Mark Churchill and was a member of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

NEC performers on this Hungarian-themed program include Tessa Lark, Amy Galluzzo, Derek Mosloff, Michael Dahlberg, joining the Festival’s 2015 Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation artist, violist Vladimir Babeshko.
