"Ned...?"
Dappled sunlight streamed through the grimy window, illuminating the young man as he sat alone, turned away from her. He was looking at something, holding it before him as he sat, back rigid, simply staring. Fallon had darted out into the forest previously, hunting game in the morning light, returning with little to brag about but a few cans of peaches she'd picked up from the old gas station.
For a moment she'd thought he'd left the house, a strange panic filling her as she called out his name, looking inside the two rooms they had remained in for the most part. There felt like an unwritten rule not to venture upstairs, to the rooms of the family that had previously lived there. Only when she'd searched all the rooms twice did she ascend the creaking stairs.
"Ned?" Fallon cleared her throat, taking a step forward.
