Jamie Reid: An english artist best know for his work created the sex pistols god sae the queen album cover shown above. His work, featuring letters cut from newspaper headlines in the style of a ransom note, came close to defining the image of punk rock, particularly in the UK.
I decide to look into the work of Jamie Reis as his cut and paste sort of style interested me his interesting style also relate to my current project. Not only because his work was influenced heavily by the same music scene (punk music which also as a relate the riot grrrls formed) but also because of the use of layering in his pieces of work.
I think it was also really import to see what other artist were creating once the punk era had descended upon the world. For what I have seen previously this thrown together messy style seemed to be extremely popular. In a way I think it summed up the music genre it was loud and un apologetic. It didn't comply with other music genres and nor did it play by the rules. It was new interesting and more importantly here to stay.
In the examples I have shown a lot of the images he creates photos of people in positions of power are used for example the queen and important historical figures, the ransom lettering is placed either around or onto the image which devalues their status which as a result for me makes the image much more powerful due to the lack of care and respect, it almost like he is making fun of the system in which most people value.
I really like the handmade sort of style and throwing things together which wouldn't normally go together and creating something quite unique. His style is more collage than dadaism however this is definitely something that i can replicate and experiment with.
