web.com woes
It’s been a long time since I’ve posted. A lot has happened that has slowed my tinkering to a crawl. Namely the little girl who should start crawling any day now. She may only be 4 months old, but the previous year was hectic.
So it seems a shame to start off 2016 with a rant, but here it goes. I detest web.com and their “family” of sites. Register.com and Network Solutions being my two least favorite registrars.
For the past 2 years, I have been trying to consolidate my companies domains under one registrar, Namecheap (who has excellent support and decent prices). Well unfortunately, a number of them existed under these two. I’m almost done dragging the domains from Register.com’s claws. I’ve got one left that is in process as I type. Unfortunately, I also have 3 SSL certs with them. And they all mysteriously got set to “SafeRenew”. And I can’t disable “SafeRenew” without calling them and waiting on hold. The 3 day wait for auth codes is bad enough, but now I have to call your understaffed support center to uncheck a box? That’s horrible.
Network Solutions on the other hand, I still have around a dozen there. I’m trying to transfer 8 as I type. But ... the registrant email address is wrong. It came from my previous registrar who was a small shop in Cleveland and has no interest in helping me out since I’ve severed all business ties with him. I have full access to the account, I can see and change everything ... except that single email address. Now somebody in the Philippines is manually transferring those domains for me, but they see the old registrant email and not the admin email. That’s a fairly big problem. So this phantom email address that only seems to exist in WHOIS is causing me all these headaches, and I can’t fix it without “recovering my account”. Why am I recovering an account I already have access to? This is the sort of customer service you get from the web.com family. Very easy to get in, very hard to get out. Oh, and did I mention they give you all that at only 300% of the cost of the other guys...
