Think of Opportunities in the Time of Crisis
On the first day of Chinese New Year, Barbara Kux, the first female board member of Siemens, borrowed the Chinese philosophical thinking: ‘’In Chinese, the word crisis comprises of two parts, danger and opportunity. And I would like to think of opportunities in the time of crisis.’’
Kux first identified five interconnected crises in 2011 - the natural disaster in Japan, the financial and debt crisis, price hikes in commodities, the uprising in the Arab world, and the failure to act on climate change – and said they ought to make us all reflect on our behaviours.
What happened in 2011, said Kux, has announced the coming of a new reality. In this new reality, we will use the planet’s resources on a more excessive scale, with the population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050. That means a growing resources scarcity and depletion in the future, said Kux.
But technology on the other hand, will drive the spread of freedom and democracy.
‘’We have seen this happening the most consistently in the Arab world, these waves are not stoppable.’’ Kux continued:’’ Democratization at the same time will also take place in the companies. Any start-up, let it be in China or Germany, can challenge a big industry player with the help of technology.’’
How can companies then find answers to these challenges and stay (become) successful? Kux said we need to look for five key words: recollection, vision, strategy, leadership, and enthusiasm – and she takes Siemens as an example to explain what she meant.
Siemens, according to Kux has first set a vision to become a global leader in green technology. It has thoroughly analyzed the green technology market, which is worth 1.6 trillion Euros and expected to grow to 3 trillion Euros already in 2020. Siemens is changing the concept of leadership in a digital time. As the head of the supply chain management division of Siemens, Kux said they are now forming partnership with their suppliers and cultivate deeper collaboration and integration - powerfully named "The New Real".
