Plural Pen #4: On Names and Naming

We're a day late but we've published the fourth issue of our newsletter!

Here's a tidbit from it! =====

How We Do It: Naming in Song of Era's End

In Song of Era's End, we established a naming system for the main characters from Peacehold Valley fairly early: phrase names, abbreviated to one word of that phrase. So we have All Good Things Must Have An Ending, or Ending. Ally To All Creatures, or Ally. And Maker of Mirth — who is actually a plural system of two people: Maker and Mirth.

But this is unique to the valley. Most people elsewhere in Rehia are named euphoniously — names that sound pleasant without carrying literal meaning. So we have the army deserter Temaera (Tem for short), her girlfriend Nirin, the forest lord Trevensen, and the goddess Ele Cambria. Ele Cambria is a slight exception: her name does have a meaning more commonly used, Lady Wisdom, which is important as her whole Thing is being the goddess of wisdom. You may have noticed that our system name is The Cambrian Crew. We’re named after the Rehian concept loosely translated as wisdom: we’re a crew of people who seek wisdom, and that’s very important to us!

6. Amazon canopy bridges enable 15,000 safe wildlife crossings with zero roadkill

Biologist Gabriel Falquetto, while monitoring wildlife along Brazil's ES-164 highway, encountered a critically endangered buffy-headed marmoset that had been killed on the road. This incident highlights the impact of human activities on biodiversity, especially given that nearly 9 million mammals are killed on Brazil's roads annually. In contrast, in Alta Floresta, efforts to mitigate wildlife-vehicle collisions have been more successful since the installation of canopy bridges in 2024, which have allowed 15,000 safe crossings for arboreal animals without any recorded roadkill. The program, known as Projeto Reconecta, aims to enhance wildlife connectivity and reduce roadkill through further installations and collaboration with local stakeholders.
