whoever first started calling patcap “egg and soldier” i want to shake your hand. truly inspired
To nerd out for a second, the thing that is so genius about Me Myself & I from a songwriting perspective is that it's structured like a traditional pop song - verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro - but it only uses the same two melodies and two sections of lyrics to fill every single one of those requirements. And even though it's essentially the same lyrics and melody throughout the entire song, you don't notice and it never becomes repetitive because the delivery is different every time and (like with many other 5SOS songs), different production elements get added with each recurrence. The repetition makes it memorable and sing-along-able on first listen - it's almost insidiously catchy. It's arguable what the actual hook is because it's all hook, the entire song is basically one long chorus and you never notice how they're manipulating your brain. It's such a simple but diabolically clever trick and that level of craft is insane and makes me so excited for what's to come on the album.
