Hello! Thank you for posting about American football in this sparse Tumblr economy <3 Asking here because neither my family or friends know the answer, but can you remember the Super Bowl having a pregame show before?
Like don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked for Bad Bunny’s halftime show! But now ppl are saying Green Day is also performing before the SB and I’m just confused cuz I never remembered there being a pregame concert besides the anthems. And I’m just wondering if they’re doing it special for the 60th bowl or smth, or like. And obviously there’s been the bunch of racist conservative BS about Bad Bunny performing there, so part of me wondered if it was just the NFL trying to appease the bigots by having another performer there too but also, Green “has all but gone on record saying they’d like to personally kick Tr*mp down several flights of stairs” Day is a strange choice for that logic. So idk!
Also I could be overthinking and it could just be for more money and views. Capitalism is an ever hungry beast and all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
omg okay hi so I will explain the confusion here
so every game has a ‘pregame’ show which consists of analysis and updates on the league/other games.
what Green Day is doing is a ‘opening ceremony’ which I think is just a Super Bowl 60 celebration. before the 50th Super Bowl they did a pre-filmed introduction with a bunch of celebs and beloved Sesame Street characters.
and they’ve been doing live shows and stuff from the Super Bowl city and last year they used it to have a little Hold My Hand moment that made me cry.
so I think they’re upping the watchability factor to sell more ad slots for before the Super Bowl starts. and knowing the NFL, they are picking Green Day for that exact reason. because they know people will tune in to see if something happens.
ultimately, it’s for the viewership because in 2022 it dropped below 100 million average viewership but piqued above 100 million during the halftime.
