It's kind of crazy that if you go to "song radio" on Spotify for "I Hear You Calling" by Gob that it also populates Treble Charger's "Brand New Low". There must be a fairly decent number of people who just play these two songs from these bands because they were both on the NHL 2002 soundtrack ... and Spotify's algorithm reflects that weird minutia that only those people would know. 😂😂
I know most gamers couldn’t care less about old sports games, but if you’ve never played NHL 2002, it’s worth it for the commentary alone, provided by Jim Hughson and Don Taylor (and the PA announcer whose name I don’t know). For example:
Jim: [Name of goalie] can handle slapshots like that any day! They say he stops them in his sleep! Don: He needs a better place to sleep. Don: Wow, 3 goals...must be a puck hog. Jim: I really don't think that's fair, Don. Don: Yeah, imagine how his teammates must feel. Don: So now they're in front. They're in an ideal position to cough up the lead. Let's see how long it takes 'em. Don: Hi, I'm Don Taylor and here's my expert analysis of this game...we need cheerleaders. Don: That shot was a piece of cake! Speaking of cake... Don: That goal was all that and a bag of chips, and a soda...and some licorice...and a chocolate bar...back in a minute, Jim. Jim: Where are you going? Don: Snack bar. Jim: Oh. (on the replay of an elbowing penalty) Don: He wields his elbow like a finely tuned piano! Jim: That was a strange comparison. Don: It kinda was. Like a fish out of soup. PA announcer (in the typical slow monotone): Attention fans: If you happen to get hit by a puck, make sure to stand up and yell loudly. Then we can point and laugh at you. PA announcer (something to the effect of this): Attention fans: If you are the owner of a 1977 Buick with a brown paint job and fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror...it's time to get a new car! Don: Methinks, yes. Jim: You thinks yes? Don: Yes, methinks. Don: Oh, glove is in the air! Don: Oh, he's gettin' a little showy with the glove! Don: Oh, glove is a many-splendored thing! Don: Never underestimate the power of glove. Don: The glove is so versatile, it catches, it....it catches. OK, maybe versatile wasn't the right word. Don: You know, if it wasn't for his blocker, that would've been a really painful arm save. Don: He saves, but more importantly, he invests. Don: He makes 'em [saves] like his bed! Ok, ok, that wasn't all that funny. (from the replay of an interference penalty) Don: He interfered with him! Jim: And you interfered with me... Don: Hey, glad I could help. (referring to a player who had just gotten a hat trick) Don: His purpose is clear. Jim: Yours, however, is not. Don: Ouch. Jim: And with that goal, Colorado is in control of this game again. Don: And I'm in control of my motor skills again! Stupid electroshock therapy... Jim: Stop complaining or I'll up that voltage again! Don: What complaining? Don: Hello there, Jim asked me to do this welcome back segment on my own because he had to go look for another color guy. Hey, wait a minute... Don: Whoa, they felt that hit in the rafters! Which begs the question...why are there people in the rafters? Don: He really didn't get that much bang for his puck. Jim: Don, you've sunk to a new low. Don: I have, haven't I?
Jim: Wow, Don, that was really incredible! Don: Well then, don’t eat it. Jim: I said “incredible”!
Throwback ... Tuesday.
I remember playing NHL 2002 featuring this gem of a song.
