If there was one thing Macklin Celebrini loved, it was your birthday. Sure- he loved seeing you on any occasion but this was a special one. You were finally nineteen, and he was away in San Jose.

Or so you thought.

The morning and afternoon were simple- they always were. Work, practice, shower, nap, makeup, change. Every birthday was always by Macklins side, but this year was different. Not in the sense you weren’t together but in the sense of being a thousand miles away and time zones apart.

Dinner was fun, surrounded by your parents and older sister. A glass of wine in your hand, smiling and laughing over something stupid your dad had said. They’d been in on the plan; strategic planning to have you facing away from the door. All so he could sneak up behind you.

I side eye my dad as he picks his phone up, “what are you doing?” I ask as I see him smile. My first instinct is to look around- see if the waitresses surround us sing happy birthday.

Instead, I hear a familiar voice against the clatter of silverware and voices. My stomach sinks and rises with joy as I turn to the most familiar face of them all.

“Mack” I whisper, launching myself into his arms, “holy shit! You’re here? What are you doing!” I ask playfully hitting at his shoulder.

“I had the week off,” he gestures to my parents, “uh they helped set everything up. Top secret”

I can’t hide the smile that flushes to my face, the joy in my bones as I get to hug my boyfriend. The boyfriend I haven’t seen in almost a year. I fist his shirt, he smells good, he smells like my Macklin.

“You are insane” I laugh softly; soaking him in as I watch his expression. The soft lighting almost creates a halo around his head.

Dinner goes on as usual, surrounded by my boyfriend, my family. I get to lay on the couch with my legs tossed over his lap as he gently plays with the fabric of my sweatpants that I’d changed into.

I get to watch a movie with my favorite person, “happy birthday love” Mack says kindly, soft and syrupy as he leans in closer to me, “I can’t believe we’re finally the same age”

“Yeah you creep- dating a seventeen year old back when you were eighteen- disgusting!” I sarcastically laugh as I pull him closer to me. Holding his broad shoulders in my arms.

“It’s fine! We got together wayyyy before I turned eighteen” He sasses. I can only smile.

No matter the gifts- the sweet cards and sentimental letters. Somehow. He’s my favorite of them all. The only one that really mattered; was Macklin showing up.

“You’re my favorite gift” I whisper into his ear. I can feel him soften against my touch, close his eyes stilly as I play with his hair.

He doesn’t say anything; he doesn’t have to. He knows it. I know it.

‘I love you’ doesn’t have to be spoken, not when you can feel it in the air. Not when you’re surrounded by it.

If there was one thing Macklin Celebrini loved more than your birthday. It was you.

The golden hue of sun lights up the room with a ethereal like haze, the morning is still, quiet, peaceful. You feel a heavy weight on your chest and wrapped around your waist. As your eyes flutter open you glance down at the blond head of curls lying on your chest. Will is sleeping on his stomach, one arm under your head, acting as a pillow, and the other is wrapped tightly around your torso, as if he’s afraid your going to disappear. As if he can hear your thoughts, the arm around your waist tightens even more, keeping you in place and away from all the and of bad of the world.

“Will?” you question softly, afraid to shatter the stillness of the morning. He only hums in response, too tired to actually speak. You bring your hand up, that was originally resting on will’s back, to his soft, blonde curls. As you run your fingers through his hair and softly scratch his head, he lets out a sound, almost like a purr, and borrows his face farther into your chest. What a simp, you think to yourself as you let out a quiet, silent chuckle. You turn your head towards your bedside table and reach out to grab your book that is lying there. Typically, you’d turn a light on but this morning, with the sun seeping into the room, gives you the perfect soft glow to read.

Will is breathing softly, a faint smile resting on his face as you continue to lightly scratch his head. You sit up a little, moving slowly so you don’t wake him up. His head slips down a little an now rests on your stomach.Before you open your book, which is now rested by your side, you drop your fingers to his lips and lightly trace them before bring your finger up to his nose and lightly drawing a line up his nasal ridge. You bring your hand up to his forehead and brush his curls away from his face. Will’s cheeks turn a light shade of pink as he mumbles a series of words you can’t quiet decipher. As you pick up your book will lifts his head up ever so slightly so he can see your face. His face breaks out into a wide smile, his still pink cheek is resting on your stomach. He presses a light kiss to your stomach and lightly scraps your stomach with his teeth, leaving a small hickey in his wake.

You finally grab the book still resting at your side and open it up to the book-marked page, you rest it on Will’s head to prop it up and give you a better view of the pages. “This okay bub?” you question softly, “I don’t want to hurt you.” Will laughs, “no love, you’re not hurting me.” You focus back on your book, a sweet love story, you can’t help but notice that even though the writer chose her mmc to have black hair and dark eyes, you can only picture him with soft blonde curls and beautiful blue eyes.

As the hockey season coming closer, I am so glad all of my boys are in good places. However, I will not guarantee anyone could recognize me once Fraser Pierre Minten and Will Smith Hockey enter their first free agent periode in the fucking same time.
