Max Evans I need a hero vid analysis
“I chose “Max Evans I need a Hero” for my fanvid. The video highlighted Max as a gritty, alcoholic, rugged hero/anti-hero. The music selected was Hero by Skillet, a heavy rock song filled with heavily distorted guitar and metal singing. When watching the show, I saw much more of the softer side of Max especially during his interactions with Liz. This fan video ignores the version of Max that is in touch with his feelings and vulnerability, showing clips of Max beating up on suspects and drinking with hardened facial expressions. I think the editing adds to the message of the fan video, though since Max isn’t always the bad cop version of himself that the fan video paints him as, there are only a select number of clips that could be used. By the end of the video, some of the clips of him struggling to restart the generator or saving Liz in the first episode were recycled. As fun and energetic as this video is, I do not buy into Max as this super manly, cold, and violent hero that the video tries to paint him as. As is especially apparent when the clips have to be recycled, that side of Max is just not something that the showrunners highlight in the actual show. He has his moments of masculine frustration when he uses violence and anger to express himself, but I feel like most of his character comes through in his interaction with his siblings and Liz. Above his brief outbursts of frustration, Max cares about those close to him and makes sacrifices for them. His version of being a “hero” as referenced in the title of this fan video is not the beating up bad guys kind of anti-hero, but the hero that drops everything for his loved ones and makes personal sacrifices for their happiness. “
