I haven't been on this blog in so long as I've been super busy, but I decided to come and have a nosy after this mornings Formula E race to see everyone's thoughts and opinions, and well here's mine.
If you have no idea what i am on about then let me tell you first briefly about the 'FIA Formula E Championship' which began today in Beijing. Formula E is simply the highest class of single-seater, fully- eletric powered racing cars. They're 10 teams of 2 drivers with 2 cars each since pitstops will include a change of cars. The 2014/2015 championship will consist on Ten races all held in major cities.
Driver lineup does include some familiar names such as Brunno Senna, Charles Pic, Sam Bird, Jarno trulli and Sebastien Buemi ect. with the championship attracting names such as Leonardo Di Caprio.
Now you have an overview of what I'm on about let me tell you i was skeptical about this new series and never really thought about watching it; But my dad had somehow convinced me to get up at 8am after a busy week of 6th form to join him. To me it sounded boring and dull with not much race action. Well I was wrong... Well Kinda.
The race pace is slow and even when i went to make my 2nd cup of morning coffee i barley missed a lap. The cars seem to make this weird screeching sound and look relatively sad in appearance. While watching the back end of qualifying (Which is on the same day as the race) most of the drivers looked to be wrestling with their cars around the tight circuit and didn't seem to drive with the fluidity cars in series such as F1 and GP2 and 3 seem to do.
The action in today's race was rather exciting. Senna out on the first lap. Pic been squeezed almost into a wall by how own team mate. A few passes here and there and something you've all herd about: The Prost and Heidfeld crash. If you haven't seen it then you can watch it here: [X]
This put my heart in my mouth. One of the worst crashes iv'e seen in a while. In my opinion Prost is clearly at fault. Not a good move and not what you'd expect from a professional driver. I do however believe that people make mistakes, I believe that no way Prost did this on purpose and I Believe it was an accident.
Verdict:
Will I watch It again?: Yes.
Is it the most amazing Motorsport ever: Not by a long way.
The series has potential and for such new technology wasn't a bad first go. It will certainly be interesting to watch the development of this series over the next few races or years. You wanted greener cars and here it is; Yes its not perfect but its a start.
