At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 81, based on 27 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Consequence of Sound said "Slowdive delivers nearly everything their fans desire in a return: familiarity, innovation, and vast atmospheres to get lost in". Giving a perfect score, The Skinny stated that "Slowdive represents an awareness of legacy, and the importance of not pissing all over it; to that extent, it’s an essential addition to canon". Drowned in Sound said the album is a "majestic return that doesn't just fill in the gaps, but points unflinchingly towards future horizons". Pitchfork said the album "offers maximum-volume shoegaze too, better than the band ever has before". Exclaim! praised the album, saying the album "certainly was a long wait, but finally Slowdive have given us the album that we have been dreaming about for the last 22 years".
I've been listening and re-listening to lots of new, pretty good music lately, but nothing is standing out as much as this new Slowdive album. I haven't been this satisfied with a decades later release since Portishead's 'Third'. Now, if Cocteau Twins would just get back together. // // #Slowdive #selftitledalbum #newalbum #22yearslater #deadoceansrecords #neilhalstead #nickchaplin #rachelgoswell #christiansavill #simonscott #englishband #shoegaze #dreampop #indiemusic #singersongwriter #reunited #👟#👀 #Portishead #Third #CocteauTwinsforever
Slowdive were an English shoegaze band that formed in 1989. The band formed in Reading, Berkshire and primarily consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar), and Christian Savill (guitar). Several drummers played with the band, including Ian McCutcheon, Adrian Sell, and most notably Simon Scott who drummed on the first and second albums. Halstead was the band's primary songwriter.
Goswell and Halstead had known each other since early childhood in Reading, Berkshire, when Goswell was an obsessive fan of The Smiths. Scott left in 1994 and when Savill and Chaplin left the band after the release of Pygmalion, the remaining members renamed the band Mojave 3.
