Allie X, ‘Too Much to Dream’

Canadian entertainment industry pro Allie Hughes started out appearing in Canadian TV shows (Being Erica and Instant Star, to name a few). She even appeared as a contestant on How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? In 2008, she scrapped the “Hughes” in favour of an X and launched her electro-pop career to some decent success. She’s now based in L.A. and is a bit of hipster favourite. "Too Much to Dream" is the first track from Allie X’s cryptically titled new album, #CLXIIɄ and it was debuted on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1last week. ‘Let Down’ (1997)

One of the more (seemingly) straightforward pop songs on OK Computer, "Let Down" siphons feelings of isolation and loneliness into a consonant symphony. It’s a song about the utter disappointment of finding out your big dreams will not come true after all, but set to uplifting music, which makes it all the more devastating.

‘Happy,’ Annabel Jones

Annabel Jones isn’t just Davy Jones’ daughter — but it is worth noting that she inherited her father’s pop sensibilities. Her latest single, "Happy," is a continuation of her amped-up, catchy, indie-electro-pop sound. (Her previous single, "IOU," was released at the beginning of the year — you can watch the video here.) Jones’ new track dropped a couple of days ago and it’s just as good as the previous one, charged with light beats, decent lyrics and strong vocals. It’ll have your head bopping in no time.

Dixie Chicks, ‘Daddy Issues’

Unless you live under a (very large) rock, you’ve probably heard at least some of Beyoncé’s Lemonade. The refreshing thing about Beyoncé’s beverage-titled album is that it doesn’t conform to any genre — it draws from indie rock to R&B to country. If there’s one unifying theme, it’s Beyoncé’s Southern roots. But the song “Daddy Issues” stands out from the rest of the album — it’s a bluegrass-inspired, full-on country song. So who better to cover it than Bey’s fellow Texans, Dixie Chicks? Interpreted by some as a move todefend Beyoncé from some country haters, the Dixie Chicks cover reinforces that “Daddy Issues” is, pretty clearly, a country song, in case anyone had their doubts.

Roisin Murphy, ‘Mastermind’

A delightful mixture of sounds and lyrics and a drum machine pieced together, Roisin Murphy's new track “Mastermind” reminds us of her musical prowess. An urgent, booming track that somehow manages to be pretty chill, you can pump this into your headphones all afternoon without getting bored — there's something new to discover on each listen. “Mastermind” is the lead single off Murphy's LP Take Her Up to Monto, which comes out July 8.

Zedd feat. Kesha, ‘True Colors’

In Kesha’s first big performance since she filed suit against Dr. Luke and her label, Sony, she got onstage with Zedd and brought down the house with a powerful performance of “True Colors” (which features the lyrics “I won’t apologize for the fire in my eyes/ let me show you my, my true colours”). The song, which was released on Zedd’s 2015 album, was originally performed by Tim James. Kesha’s performance showcased impeccable vocals, which have often been obscured by heavy production in previous releases.

Carly Rae Jepsen, 'Boy Problems'

Carly Rae Jepsen's candy-flavoured voice is perfect for this girl-centric video featuring fantastic teen journalist Tavi Gevinson and model Diana Veras, among others. Jepsen channels Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" look in this fun, glittery video for a song (co-written by Sia) that's essentially about ranking female friendship over boy issues. "Boy Problems" is a refreshing spin on an otherwise traditional pop track and another nod toward Jepsen's understated cred.
