“Night Raids,” the title track of the new EP from Boston’s Malleus, opens with two minutes of mournful synths, overlaid with the sounds of steel on steel, men shouting, horses screaming and thunder rumbling. The device is very familiar to any longtime listener of heavy rock, and also an explicit nod to some of Malleus’s key influences: the cacophonous march of orcs that commences Emperor’s In the Nightside Eclipse (1994) and “Storm of Damnation,” the bell-tolling, wind-howling track that kicks off Bathory’s first record. It’s sort of goofy, and it would be easy to dismiss “Night Raids” as empty pastiche if the rest of the song wasn’t so good. But it is: as soon as the guitar tears into its riff, Malleus demonstrate that their inhabitation of the sweet spot among black metal, high-velocity thrash and the ethos of punk extends well beyond requisite nods to convention. To be sure, the band isn’t interested in experimentation: the song is all speedy riffs, gnarly vocals, a chunky breakdown section, gritty soloing. The formula was initially concocted by Venom and Celtic Frost in the early 1980s, and adopted by the black metal bands that proliferated in the late 1980s and 1990s. Throughout Night Raids, Malleus combine that formula with an earnest energy and the total conviction of indignant rage. What they create isn’t exactly new, but it’s lively as hell.

As the names dropped above suggest, Malleus’s sound can be most easily described as a contemporary rendition of first-wave black metal, when the genre was still suffused with a bar-band-and-dusty-basement toughness. A lot has changed in black metal, as proggy musical ambition and showbiz shtick have led a lot of bands to produce baggy, saggy compositions propped up by bluster and spectacle. In that environment, grotesques like Deafheaven have become industrially viable. Malleus work their craft at a considerable distance from those hyper-commodified tones. “Boston black metal” isn’t a phrase that trips easily off the tongue. But that relative remoteness from an established scene might work to Malleus’s advantage, as does Boston’s long and prominent history of punk. The Freeze, SS Decontrol, Slapshot, even the knuckle-dragger, thrashy hijinks of Gang Green—those sounds run deep in the city, and Malleus’s sonic profile bears the imprint of that punky mettle.  

The punk attitude is most palpable on “Night Raids.” The EP’s other long track, “The Wretched,” is slower and nastier. Its midtempo, NWOBHM riffing creates a steady sonic spine, chugging along close to the ground, down in the dirt. That groundedness fits the band’s persona, as does their name. The malleus is one of the bones in your inner ear, more commonly called “the hammer,” as derived from the term’s Latin roots. Hence Malleus seek to link themselves to the essence of our experience of sound and music. Those bones in your ear are tiny, delicate things, but they can create some serious noise. There’s nothing delicate or tiny about “The Wretched,” right down to its extended length. And all along that length, the band does nothing to refine the song’s relation to sound: it’s all riff, all the time. Bare and mean. If anything can make a virtue of those characteristics, it’s music like this.
