Alomancy shuddered. She wanted to hiss and punch him, but she knew better. She'd rather keep her arms unbroken for the time being. Though, the thought of landing one right in his face definitely amused her.
Hunter
The man could hear his friends screaming for help in other parts of the woods, but he just kept running, blocking out the sounds of their terror as he tried to escape.
They had originally ventured out to these woods in hopes of finding some good game, maybe make some extra money by selling the pelts off if they could. At first, things had gone great. They had been able to take down a couple of deer and even snared some rabbits, but as they started to leave, some huge thing attacked them.
All four of them scattered as the dark creature started to eat their haul, hoping that distraction would be enough for escape. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.
One by one, the creature started to hunt them down, toying with them as they seemed to go in circles. They only knew that one of their number had fallen prey to the beast when they heard an increase in shouting that would abruptly cut off. Now he was the last, frantically searching for the way out, or at least a place to hide, but the creature would always be nearby, slowly getting closer each time he saw it, it’s teeth bared in a gruesome, bloodstained grin. Then it suddenly wasn’t there anymore, no matter how hard he looked or strained to hear movement around him.
Exhausted, the man slowed and staggered to a stop, trying to catch his breath as he leaned against a tree. He listened, but heard nothing, it was dead silent apart from his labored breathing. Had he actually escaped?
A reluctant hope bubbled in his chest. He’d survived...
There was a dark chuckle behind him. The man turned just in time to see the naga lunge at him, mouth wide open.
Hunger
The nightmarish creature raked his claws across the trunk of a large tree, gouging deep scars into the wood which began to well up with sap. He did it several more times, slowly stripping away the outer layer of bark from the area he chose to sharpen his claws on. The sap continued to bleed out from the tree when he finally stopped and moved on, choosing a large rock to continue the action.
He was hungry again... Yet his hunger could never truly be satisfied no matter how many lesser beings he devoured. Their souls sated him much more than their bodies, but he still took everything regardless when he became tired of playing with them.
The souls of his prey held such flavor no mater what the soul came from. Animals had a wild taste, their primal fear sharp and bitter. Humans and mythics had such a range of different tastes that it was hard to decide what was better, but they were always saturated with fear and despair in addition to everything else. Whatever the taste, it always lingered on his tongue afterwards, long after the metallic salt of their blood had faded away. Satisfying. But he always wanted more.
Shattered Part 1
The splintering of his being had been the worst pain imaginable. His body had lost many essential pieces of himself, the shards tossed and scattered around the bloody clearing, half buried in the churned earth. He was too fragmented to sense anything but the all encompassing pain.
Then, he was slowly being gathered, piece by piece. Someone was holding him, but he was still too scattered to know who it was. So hard to think, but it was getting a little easier with every piece of him added to the pile. He finally recognized who was holding him when the final fragment had been added.
‘Violet….’
He struggled to say it, both from the shame of what he had done and the pain of becoming this broken husk... He felt her revulsion and shock, fully expecting her to toss him away so he could be forgotten and left to his shattered existence, but instead, she wrapped him within something, a part of his shredded vest perhaps? He was left to his own muddled thoughts with the separation, but he could still faintly sense the child as she moved about.
She would occasionally reopen his makeshift container, often rousing him from the darker, if still fairly muddled, thoughts that continued to plague him, but she never said anything to him. No shouted insults or demands for answers like she did when she was clawing at him. It confused him greatly, but he didn’t feel like he had the energy to really dwell on it. Why didn’t she just leave him...?
The Guilty
As she touched the glowing shards, Violet felt a faint warmth spread through her small fingers and hand. The steady pulse wavered, stuttering, before returning to normal again. She waited, but the voice didn't come forth despite the fact she could feel it's presence.
Frowning, she shifted, wondering if she should just forget it, but then she sensed something, almost... sad? It made her angry, what right did their killer have to be sad?!
Gritting her teeth she clenched her hand around some of the shards and yelled out, "Hey! I know you're there, now start talking!"
She sensed several more confusing emotions from the shards. Just when she was about to give up she finally heard, ‘Violet....’
Her eyes narrowed and she glared at the shattered pieces hatefully, “That’s what you said last time too, how about you say something else besides my name. How would someone like you even know what my name is? And what even are you anymore!? You ate my friends and left me here alone, you... you jerk!”
She hissed when she thought she sensed amusement of all things from the thing, but it spoke again before she could throw the shards away, ‘Pieces of the soul. Most of what remains of the real Vincent... The... creature that ate your friends is no longer Vincent... Just a twisted shell that will no doubt go on to kill many more...’
The child spirit shivered at the thought of that thing doing the same to others, and tried not to think about how she and her friends were partially responsible for it. “I-”
‘You couldn’t have known, Violet... I would have thought breaking the gem would surely kill me as well. This is my fault, I’m the one who killed you and the other four... I let my... anger and sadness overwhelm me and turned into the monster humans said I was. Now I’m even more so...’
Violet felt uneasy, seeing brief flashes of people she’d never seen before, and their broken, bloody bodies. She thought one looked like a child naga that might have been her age... The flashes kept repeating, faster and faster until she couldn’t take anymore and jerked away.
Gasping and shaking from the experience, she glanced at the shards, but she didn’t need to touch them to know Vincent was spiraling in guilt and sadness... Not knowing what else to do, she gingerly wrapped the shards up again and set the small bundle to the side.
What Remains
Violet tried to ignore the gem shards to the best of her ability. Her first impulse was to throw them away somewhere so that she wouldn't be bothered, but in the end she just kept them wrapped up in the purple cloth.
Morbid curiosity continued to get the best of her and she would often unwrap the cloth to look at the pieces she and the others had broken off their killer. A weak light seemed to pulse from the shards at times, growing a bit stronger whenever her hands were near them. It was almost like a strange heartbeat...
She recalled the weak voice she heard when she had held them in her hands, his voice, she knew that for sure, but why? Why could it talk? His body was-
.......
It just didn't make any sense.
Was there enough there for her to get answers? What would she even say?
As she stared at them, a deep frown on her face, they started to glow faintly again, a steady pulse. She hesitated, then reached out to touch them.
