Kurt Cobain — 𓆸
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not. -Kurt D. Cobain
Be great is not what Kurt Cobain would say.
Be great at whatever you chose to do. The kind of shit I used to hear when I was 14. What an unbelievably unfair sentence. Most of us will never be great at anything. We'll be lucky if we're happy at what we do MOST days and better be glad we even can do something to make a living.
I am not great at what I do. Well, I am pretty good at what I do now a days (so 3 years out of a life of 34 and a working life of 16 years) but I am not one hundred percent happy about it. I am content. I am good at what I do. Would I have dreamed about having the job I have? Nope. I am a "nerd" in the biz I'm in and not a lot of people appreciate what I do. Although the ones who do, really appreciate me a great deal, which is so awesome considering the alternative.
Of course, you'd hope most people realize they won't be the exception. But why can't they? Later in life, as a 20-something, that became my question. That and "How many people believe the you are special and unique utter bullshit?!". When at 25 I did get what I considered to be an ordinary life and was so happy with what I had, obviously, it was all shot to shit. I learned the true meaning of the word irony. Never again that kind of simplicity would be enough.
The point is that what is troublesome about the "Be great at whatever you chose to do" is you have to CHOOSE. When are you supposed to choose? It should be: Be okay with taking your time at finding out what it is you don't want to do. No pressure. Bob McFerrin kind of don't worry. Just don't take your sweet ol'time because no one is ever going to support a lazy ass. And I finish that though with the image of Kurt Cobain just flashing before my eyes and how the turned over sentence is now also shot to shit.
