NIT Raipur : An Educational Bonanza for the Kids
I am not just an academician by profession. I didn’t become a microbiologist because I wanted to simply earn money. Science has always been my passion. I am an academician from my soul. It is a way of life for me. To abide by ethics, logic and responsibility is what keeps me going in my profession and also in my life. I would like to see my kids live by principles and live for the pursuit of truth. They are too young for me to push them into a certain field but as a parent I feel responsible to at least show them what the options are, so that some day they can find their own passion just like I did the first time I saw a microscope.
When I realized that I was close to one of the premier engineering institutes in the country, I could not think about missing an opportunity to take my kids there. The National Institute of Technology, Raipur is an Institute of National Importance and became an NIT in the year 2007. Before then it was known widely as the Government College of Mining and Metallurgy. It was among the very few institutes in the country that started research and development in the field of mining and metallurgy during the early post-independence years. The college was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the year 1956 and in just a few years a pioneering institute in engineering education in the country.

The institute provides access to general public especially students. It has preserved a number of equipment and historic mementos relating to its 58 year long history. The history of the institute also reflects the history of India’s development from a nation which was dependent on the west for its technology to one of the largest exporters of research designs and engineering solutions that it has become today. The National Institute of Technology, Raipur has made a big contribution towards this progress.
My kids enjoyed the trip exploring Mining and Metallurgy and then we went through the college excavating and looking for hidden delicacies. We eventually found them in the college cafeteria. The food was just remarkable. I became nostalgic as I remembered my own life as a student.
फर्स्ट इयर और हमारा ग्रुप
वास्तविकता से परे हर किसी के मन में कॉलेज की अलग ही छवि होती है, और राष्ट्रीय प्रोद्योगिकी संस्थान रायपुर में दाखिला लेने के बाद बहुतों के उम्मीदों का गुब्बारा फुट गया, कुछ दृढ-ईक्षाशक्ति के अती उत्साह छात्र पढाई में जुट गए और बाकि बचे लोगों ने इसे अपनी नियति स्वीकार कर मनबहलाव(टाइम-पास) में खुद को समर्पित कर दिया |
मैं खुद ही टाइमपास में इस तरह खोया हुआ था की मुझे अंत-सत्र(एंड सेमेस्टर) पेपर तक पता ही नहीं चला था की ‘communication skills’ नाम का कोई सब्जेक्ट भी है| फर्स्ट इयर में छात्रावास में रहते हुए हमनें(Bhilain group) बहुत से प्रतिबंधित विधाओं में महारत हासिल कर ली थी जिसमें प्रतिपुरुष हाजिरी (proxy) लगाना बहुत आम बात थी | CSVTU की महिमा अपरम्पार थी जो मैंने जीवन में पहली और आखरी बार बैक का अनुभव प्राप्त किया था, मैथ्स जो की हमेशा से मेरा प्रिय विषय हुआ करता था उसमे ऐसी अनहोनी होनी से अहम् को ठेस जरूर लगा था पर जब यह पता चला की 60% जनता वीरगति को प्राप्त हुई है तो मन को बड़ा संतोष पहुंचा और CSVTU के वाईस चांसलर और उत्तर-पुस्तिका के जांच-कर्ताओं के समूचे खानदान को सामूहिक रूप से कोसा गया |
हमारा ग्रुप ऐसे महारथियों से सरोबर था जो अंत-सत्र परीक्षा के एक दिन पूर्व भी उतनी ही तन्मयता से खेल कूद, ताश और तफरी में संलग्न रहते की उन्हें ‘श्री या मिस्टर’ की जगह ‘टीपी’(टाइम पास) की उपाधि से नवाजा गया था | द्वितीय सत्र के एक पेपर के ठीक पन्द्रह घंटे पूर्व हमारे ग्रुप ने ‘बाबुल’ नामक चलचित्र जाने का निश्चय किया जिसका बहुत त्रासद अंत हुआ, मेरे आलस ने मुझे इस अनहोनी घटना से बचा तो लिया पर अगले पेपर में कुछ खास कर भी नहीं पाया | रविवार को विरले ही bhilains रुकते थे क्योंकि घर पहुंचने पर VIP होने का अनुभव किया जाता और मनचाहा फरमाइशी कार्यक्रम चलता | रविवार को छात्रावास में (so called)विशेष खाना मिलता था जिसके लिए छात्र गरमा-गरम पूरी लेने रसोई तक पहुँच जाते थे और इसी जोश में अपना हाथ भी जला डालते थे, कई छात्र तो अपनी थालियों में पुरियों का ऐसा अम्बर लगा देते मानो ये भोजन नहीं आपातकालीन स्थिति में मिलने वाला राहत दल द्वारा बांटा गया फ़ूड पैकेट हो | और आम दिनों में मिलने वाले खाने की क्या ही बात कहें, दाल का रंग और श्यानता(viscosity) का संयोग ऐसा अद्भुत था की वो किसी और अखाद्य घृणित पदार्थ का भ्रम पैदा करता था |
उन दिनों में हमारे जीवन का मंत्र यह बन गया था की “पढोगे लिखोगे बनोगे खराब, खेलोगे कूदोगे बनोगे नवाब”, सुबह से शाम और फिर सुबह तक बस इतनी लगन से फुटबॉल, बास्केट बाल, क्रिकेट, टीटी इत्यादि खेलते की देखने वालों को लगता की मानो ओल्य्म्पिक्स में भारत का प्रतिनिधितिव कर रहे हो | कुछ लोगों में अपनत्व का भाव इतना था की शेविंग किट से लेकर चप्पल तक share करते, कईयों को तो पानी से ऐसी एलर्जी थी की जल की एक बूँद बिना स्पर्श किये महीनों गुजार देते| किसी के जन्मदिन आने पे बेचारे की शामत आ जाती, GPL तो दिन में तीन चार बार अलग अलग स्थानों (कॉलेज/हॉस्टल/स्टेशन) पर पड़ता ही था परन्तु कभी कभी शरीर के निचले अग्रिम भाग में लात पड़ने से आदमी दर्द से बिलबिला उठता था |
रात्रि को तीसरे पहर तक पूरी जनता एक ही रूम में पड़ी रहती, PJs का आदान प्रदान होता, अपने ‘एकतरफा’ प्यार के किस्से share किये जाते और एक दूसरे की जमके खिंचाई की जाती थी, क्या दिन थे यार वो भी! परीक्षा के समय हमारा भाईचारा और गहरा जाता क्योंकि हमारा विश्वास था की “एकता में शक्ति और अकेले में फटती”, ग्रुप स्टडी अपने चरम पे रहती और महत्तवकान्छा केवल न्यूनतम उत्तीर्ण अंक(minimum passing marks) पाने की रहती | नोट्स के नाम पे कागज के कुछ चीथडों और फोटो कॉपीस के अलावा कुछ नहीं रहता था |
तब आजादी के आकाश में पर फैलाये उड़ रहे थे और बेफिक्री में हर दिन कटे जा रहे थे ना किसी चीज की चिंता थी ना जिम्मेदारी | मेरे जीवन के सबसे अच्छे दिनों में से थे वो, बहुत खुशनसीब था मैं जो ऐसा कॉलेज और ऐसे दोस्त मिले थे |
