Pet peeve: People in fandom (or otherwise) overusing the word "twink."
Step into my office. I wanna show you a queer linguistics thing, and go over the ways I consider it to be misapplied.
Confused? Small & effeminate ≠ twink. In queer slang, the word began as an acronym in personals ads: Thin, White, Into No Kink.
Look at your queer, male presenting person of choice, please. Is he:
Fat? Not a twink. Ok, sure, he has big sad eyes and he blushes when someone says a bad word. You wanna take a bite out of his neck about it. I empathize, I do. Look at him, he's so biteable. He isn't a Twink.
Not white? Not a twink. He's skinny, he's a bit naïve. He's a little awkward. He just wants to be kissed and doted on. I get the appeal, believe me. Melanin check - is he Black, Brown, Asian, First Nations? Delicious as ever, but disqualified. He's not a tWink.
And finally: Is he a freak? By which I mean, does he smile knowingly when someone makes a joke about spanking, or handcuffs, or choking? Believe it or not, he isn't a twink. He could be the tiniest, whitest fairy on the planet, but if he's constantly doubling and tripling his entendres, biting his lip at guys who are all tied up and bleeding, or slowly taking off his gloves while making intense smoldering eye contact, he's not a twINK.
A short list of characters that I've seen described as twinks, who are not:
Martin Blackwood, TMA: Canonically described as fat. "I'm not the smallest guy in the world." "Positively roomy." Not a twink.
Essek Thelyss, CR2: The Kryn are coded as nonwhite in many ways - intercultural prejudices, skin color, sociopolitical position - but even if they qualify as white in exandrian culture, Essek's been revealed to be quite a little freak in the live shows. I see you, size queen. Not a twink.
Occtis Tachonis, CR4: Canonically slight, canonically a virgin. Poor kid's as pure as undriven snow. He has several distinctly Asian features in the official character art, and Alex describes him as olive skinned. Not a twink.
Fabian Seacaster, D20 Fantasy High: Skinny dancing pirate bard. Flamboyant, of course. Kink? Shush, he's in high school. Most importantly, he's Black. Not a twink.
Astarion, BG3: At first glance? Maybe. Whip thin. White as the Cliffs of Dover in January. But c'mon, listen to him. The bitch is a walking innuendo. He's never met a kink he didn't respect and appreciate as high art. Not a twink.
Voldo, Soul Calibur: He's white because he's Italian, not just because he's undead. He's thin as a rail. He's so gay it's ludicrous. His tragic backstory is surprisingly romantic. But let's be serious, okay. He's 98% bondage gear, 2% skin. He moans and hisses his way through his extremely kinky unlife. Stop calling my man a twink.
