In her quest to find Eric, Pam ends up playing Russian roulette with a man in a packed bar in Marrakesh. Nizor, a man whom Pam challenges, mentions number 27 a couple of times, 27 being a number of times he survived death.
Nizor is a very religious man, probably a sufi like most Moroccans. Sufism is described as the the inner, mystical dimensions of Islam. Classical Sufi scholars have defined Sufism as "a science whose objective is the reparation of the heart and turning it away from all else but God" which is basically what Nizor tells Pam; the world is ending, she needs to make peace with her God and that God can save her.
What is significant about number 27? In Qur'an, sura 27 (Al-Naml, The Ants) talks about stories of the prophets Moses, Solomon, Salih, and Lot to emphasise the message of tawhid (oneness of God) in Jewish and Arabian prophets. The miracles of Moses, described in the Book of Exodus, are mentioned in opposition to the arrogance and kufr of Pharaoh. The story of Solomon is most detailed: Solomon converted Bilqis to the true religion after a hoopoe reported to him that she was a sun-worshipping queen. The sura's name is taken from the ants whose conversations were understood by Solomon. The Ants has no thematic significance in the sura beyond it being a familiar phrase amongst believers, a reminder of the sura's story of Solomon. It should be noted, however, that ants do hold a privileged status among animals in Islam on account of the story of Solomon.
Some of the main concepts in sura 27 are:
-God has no equal as a creator; all those who associate others with God are guilty of shirk.
-Earthly knowledge is nothing compared to God; only those with open ears and eyes will turn to God.
-Disbelievers of the message of God will have no hope come Judgement Day.
-The revelation is a clear warning. Sura 27 reiterates that all humanity must turn to God without delay.
Interestingly, 27th book in the New Testament is the Book of Revelation (or the Apocalypse) a central book in the Christian eschatology, which prophesizes The Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Seven seals, Whore of Babylon, false prophets and Antichrist, Armageddon and culminates with the Judgment Day and The Second Coming of Christ and establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven.
