#NEWYORKSTUDENTS: @nmfonline is opening 2 Scholarship applications today: the Dr. Darrell L. Edwards Scholarship and the Dr. James McCune Smith Medical Student Award. Dr. Darrell L. Edwards Scholarship Established in 2020 by Millicent Cox-Edwards, in memory of her husband Dr. Darrell L. Edwards, this need-based award of $10,000 will be given to one 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year African American medical (MD candidate only) student who is either enrolled at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) or from the Bay Area. The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent grade and must demonstrate commitment to providing quality care to underserved, urban communities. Applications will close on February 1, 2021 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. Dr. James McCune Smith Medical Student Award Established in 2019, this award is given in honor of Dr. James McCune Smith, who was the first African American to receive a medical degree. The award provides $5,000 to one (1) African American, Afro-Latino, or Native American student enrolled in an accredited medical school in Connecticut, New Jersey, or New York who exemplifies the qualities of Dr. McCune in his or her commitment to academic excellence, leadership, service and research. As part of their application, students must comment on their current health disparities research. The selected Scholar will be required to give a 10-minute presentation on his or her research on health disparities at the Dr. James McCune Smith Scholarship Lecture and Awards Reception in Spring 2021. Service-Learning Program: #UHF/ #NMF Diverse Medical Scholars Program - Application Opens Today! Established in 2013, the United Health Foundation (UHF) has partnered with National Medical #Fellowships (NMF) to offer the Diverse Medical Scholars Program. This is a service-learning program designed to increase the number of qualified medical providers who have a commitment to improving access to quality healthcare in medically underserved communities. This program is a renewable scholarship that provides a $7,000 award to thirty-eight (38) qualified 2nd-4th year medical students. Selected Scholars will be enrolled in a medical school located in the U.S., be a member of an underrepresented minority group, and have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to underserved communities. All Scholars are required to complete a 200-hour self-directed community health project with a community site of their choice.
