My broken Douglas Murray tag was trying to tell me something!!! :O Look
Douglas Murray missed his second consecutive practice Monday and appears doubtful for Tuesday night’s game against Minnesota at HP Pavilion. He went on the ice after the formal part of the practice ended and his right hand/wrist was heavily bandaged.
When asked if he could play against the Wild, Murray said: “I can’t close my fingers.”
Still, Sharks coach Todd McLellan preferred to list Murray as “questionable” and said it would be a mistake to count Murray out of the lineup.
“Dougie Murray is different,” McLellan said. “If there’s an ounce in him that can find a way, he will. That’s why we don’t ever rule him out. That’s why I put him as questionable.”
McLellan, keeping with hockey’s code, only called the injury “upper body” and said Murray “probably” was hurt blocking a shot Saturday night in the 5-3 loss to Florida.
The Sharks coach already was toying with the idea of shuffling the defensive pairings. He verbally roasted his mistake-plagued blue-line corps after the loss to Florida. Then McLellan cancelled Sunday’s scheduled off-day to re-emphasize the idea of work ethic for the entire team with some sweat.
During Monday’s practice, Dan Boyle and Marc-Edouard Vlasic formed one pairing. Brent Burns and Jim Vandermeer were another. The third pairing consisted of Jason Demers and Colin White.
“We’ll work on that,” McLellan said when asked what the pairings could like Tuesday. “We have some decisions to make, partner-wise. We may look at a fresh body as well and figure something out later today.”
McLellan said there will be seven defensemen in San Jose by Tuesday, which means somebody is coming up from Worcester of the AHL. The presumption is that Justin Braun would be the guy.
“Potentially,” McLellan said. “Matty Irwin is playing pretty well down there. Nick Petrecki, too. There’s a number of guys playing well down there.”
Anyway, Boyle likely will have a new partner come Tuesday.
“I’ve been playing with Dougie for three years now,” Boyle said. “But I don’t know what we’ll do. I don’t think anything is written in stone.”
I’ll try to post more after visiting the Minnesota practice later today. Hope to spend some time with ex-Sharks Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi.
