FOR EVERY “⏳” I RECEIVE, MY MUSE WILL OPENLY TALK ABOUT A BIT OF THEIR BACKSTORY.

I spent about a year in Brasil, when I was 23, and then a few months here and there after that. It became almost like a second home to me. I took Dave there, once or twice, and he spent so much time taking photos, and studying the insects. He tried to shoot a short film, but he never showed me the footage. It was the most alive I’d ever seen him, and I would do anything just to be there again with him.

I met a gal there. (Vantas, if you’re reading this, it’s not who you’re thinking.) She was beautiful, absolutely stunning. She had a voice deep and smooth like honey, and god could she wield a sword. I never fooled myself into thinking I loved her, but we spent long nights together and by day we strifed like equals. It’s been years, and I haven’t spoken to her since.

She got along well with Dave, she loved him like a son, and I hate to think of how things could have been in any other life.

I almost died there, many times, by gun and otherwise. Every bullet I took in Roteiro just made my love for the place stronger.

“It’s going to be fine. I don’t know why you’re freaking out so much.”

“I’m not freaking out, you asslick!”

Karkat rolled his eyes, “Obviously.”

Avi’s hands tightened around his thermos, the cool metal not doing much except numbing his hands. “I don’t know why I even brought you.”

“I don’t know why you brought me either. ‘Hey Karkat, want to come to dinner?’ ‘No, I’m good. Already ate.’ ‘Please come to dinner. I’m begging you.’ Sound familiar?” Complete with individual voices, the mockery was well delivered and sharp as a blade.

“...Yeah.” Avi was uncharacteristically quiet, staring a hole into the dashboard.

The car was silent for a moment, save for Karkat’s ‘Tch’s of annoyance whenever somebody cut them off in the already standstill traffic.

“You know she doesn’t,” He proceeded to cut someone else off in a moment of what Avi could only assume was spite, “hate you, right? You’re probably just projecting, or whatever.”

Avi didn’t respond, letting the silence speak for itself.

“Just, stop worrying about it. You know her. You were conceived in the same womb.”

“Unfortunately.” Avi mumbled under his breath, running a fingernail along the rim of the thermos.

“It’s just her...” Karkat trailed off, obviously unsure of what Kanaya was to her.

“Girlfriend. Feline co-parent. Live-in paramour. Lover. Wife. Whatever. They talk about feelings and have sex more than I would have ever liked to have known about.” Avi listed, cringing at the thought.

They took a moment to mutually cringe.

“Right. Girlfriend. It’s just her girlfriend. So what are you worried about?” Karkat tilted his head to the side, eyes still fixed on the motionless truck in front of them.

Rose hasn’t seen me in a year. I’ve never met Kanaya. Last time I was there she kicked me out. She doesn’t know 90% of what’s going on. I owe her so much. I’m probably going to burst into tears at the sight of her and it’s going to be embarrassing and Kanaya’s going to think I’m a weirdo.

“I don’t know.” Avi lied, glancing out the window.

The brunet sighed but, instead of rolling his eyes as Avi had expected, reached over and laid a hand on his forearm in an unfamiliar, yet comforting gesture. “Get your head out of your ass. It’ll be fine.”

“Yeah. Yeah, you’re right.” A nod of agreement followed and Avi felt himself relaxing a bit under Karkat’s hold, like some sort of sorcerer’s spell. Jot that one down in the mental notepad, Strider. You might need it for later.

“I’m usually right.” Wipe that smirk off your face you cocksucker.
