Air Nomad headcanons

As promised to @sokkastyles, here's some of my headcanons about Air Nomads. Some of them contradict official canon. I'm fine with that.

Air Nomads had roughly the same proportion of benders as in other peoples: about 20–30 per cent. (The idea that all Air Nomads were benders comes from Fire Nation propaganda to present all Air Nomads as a threat.)

There was, however, a specific monastic order that required bending as part of the devotions, and Gyatso and Aang were members of it, though Aang was still in training/an acolyte. Part of the duties of this order was the running of the Temples, though the Temples were open to all.

There were other monastic orders that were open to both benders and non-benders; Guru Pathik may have been a member of one of these.

However, the majority of the Air Nomads were not monastic, though they were part of the same religious system and were as a whole a spiritual people. They meditated, honoured the spirits of objects or places with offerings of food and crafted objects, and asked the Great Spirits’ blessings on each other and on the places they visited.

They would congregate at the Temples for festivals and holy days, and sometimes visit for stopovers or if they had a particular need (bison calving, for example; or airbending children might stay there for a while for specific training), but otherwise they would live a nomadic life.

Most Air Nomads travelled around in small mixed groups (maybe 20–50 people of all genders; children and elders, benders and non-benders, religious and lay). They would have a few sky bisons, bonded to individuals within the group. Each bison would typically carry up to eight people.

The people in the groups might or might not be related by blood (a group would usually contain several families), but they would become emotionally close in their time together, so the group would act as one family. Children would typically remain in the same groups as their parents, and be collectively raised by the group: they would know and be close to their parents, but also be just as close to other members of their group. (The idea that children were all ‘raised by monks’ and didn’t know their parents is, again, Fire Nation propaganda.)

They would usually travel at a leisurely pace: a few tens of miles in a day, even though bison can go a lot faster at need. They would choose a site to camp and stay there for anything from one night to a couple of weeks at a time, setting up the tents and prayer flags they carried with them.

A group would typically have at least a vague route that they would follow over the course of a year. They'd spend much of their time in more isolated regions in the mountains, where there is plenty of grass for the bison to graze on; or visit their own orchards and gardens at the right time of year to cultivate them.

But they would also visit towns and villages on their route, and in many places would be hired as seasonal workers. For example, helping out with fruit-picking in one region, moving on to the rice-planting in another, ensuring that the Sun Festival in a certain town has a clear sky for the day, bringing rainclouds over to water newly sown fields, and other seasonal work.

They would pass on messages and bear passengers from one place to another, and carry trade goods and news from place to place. They would also sell their own crafts: carved wood items, paintings, and bison fur cloth and yarn (I’m a big fan of the bison fur textiles headcanons).

They would also put on concerts! I think airbenders would be great musicians. Not only could they do wonderful things with pipes, flutes, horns, and other wind instruments, but skilled master airbenders could create sound by vibrating the air directly to create amazing aural experiences. And of course they could use airbending to project sound so large crowds could hear.

Different groups would meet up together at the temples or at commonly visited waypoints. People could switch groups at will, permanently or just for a short time, typically to travel together with a new friend or loved one, or to go somewhere new. Gyatso joined Aang’s group so he could teach him (perhaps even before Aang was officially identified as the Avatar; perhaps baby Aang recognised him as Friend). Later, Aang spent more of his time in the Southern Air Temple as an acolyte (but still travelled for the better part of the year).

Bison calve once every few years, typically in litters of two to four, and the babies start flying after a few weeks. They stay with their mothers (riding on them when necessary) until old enough to be separated. Then the young bison will be brought to the Temples to be bonded with an Air Nomad. It's expected to be a bender they bond with, but non-benders have been known to be thus favoured too.
