Nitori looked down into the brown coffee in front of her. The murky liquid spiraled slowly in the cup. The bittersweet smell of coffee and cream wafted up to Nitori's nose. She dipped her spoon in and mixed the drink again, making sure it was uniformly combined.
She took a deep breath before taking her first sip of coffee. As expected, the bitter taste caused her to pucker her mouth in disgust. She looked into her cup, which had hardly diminished. "How could anyone drink this stuff?" she said to herself.
At that moment, she saw another girl walk into the cafe. She seemed to be from a different school, but also here to enjoy a cup of bitter coffee. But her expression showed signs of distress. Nitori was debating whether or not if she should talk to her...

At lunchtime, Nitori went to her usual spot in the courtyard. She was going to act on her resolve to greet someone new. Looking around, she spotted someone who seemed to be alone. She took a few deep breaths in order to calm herself, and walked boldly up to the girl.
"H-h-hello," Nitori said unsteadily. "H-how are you?"

Nitori slowly walked up the hill on the way to school. It was a steep, yet beautiful hill, cloaked in falling cherry blossom petals. She walked alone, surrounded by students. But while everyone else had a partner or two to talk to, Nitori walked up in silence.
Halfway up the hill, she saw another girl who was walking alone. Nitori didn't know who she was. Perhaps she was feeling the same kind of loneliness Nitori was feeling? But it didn't matter. Nitori would just pass right by her, too afraid to talk to someone new...
