Teen Years
- After returning from the Isle of Armor, Victor opts to keep his hair at its newly grown-out length. This decision is partially influenced by it giving him a new comfort device for his anxiety and partially because he quickly discovers he loves Bede playing with it when it’s loose.
- Bede also enjoys it more than they’d wish to admit to anyone but Victor. Their brain temporarily short-circuited at how good the new style looked on him when they first saw it. If the prior notes didn’t convince Victor to keep it grown-out, Bede’s flustered reaction most certainly succeeded.
- Bede is SUPER touch-starved. Against most people’s expectations, they revel in Victor’s naturally cuddly behavior, accepting hugs and snuggles whenever possible. However, neither of them are particular fans of PDA, still preferring to keep their relationship on a need-to-know basis (i.e. their friends, family, Pokemon, and pretty much every significant character from the game).
- Opal’s one problem with Victor is his general lack of style, as all he really looks for in clothing is comfort. She takes several opportunities to insist he accessorize and/or throw some more pink into his outfit. Bede eventually decides enough is enough and gives him a necklace with a pink, berry-shaped charm on it to appease her (and if they enjoyed watching Victor’s face light up, so be it).
- Victor’s heard enough of Opal’s unsolicited fashion advice to figure out his significant other’s ulterior motive, but loves the gesture anyway. He attempts to find an accessory-related gift for Bede as well, settling on a cozy scarf with a little Hattenna logo on the end. They now wear it as part of both their casual outfit and gym uniform.
- While Victor’s social anxiety and tendency to overthink still act up from time to time, he’s still fairly secure in their relationship. They don’t openly admit to it, but Bede is actually the most insecure in that regard. Their past mistakes and the numerous fans Victor has meld with their abandonment issues and leave them frequently worrying Victor will leave them just like everyone else.
- Bede begins to slowly integrate into the friend group formed by the Postwick Trio and Marnie. They’re still reasonably wary of Gloria, but they grow to tolerate each other. They find themselves on much better terms with Hop and never really had any problems with Marnie in the first place. Victor still regularly finds himself mediating, though it’s not much worse than when it was just the original three.
- It takes some digging, but Victor manages to find out when Bede’s birthday is (personal headcanon: August 13). They’ve never bothered to celebrate it since before they arrived at the orphanage and have mostly just written it off ever since. Since birthdays have always been fairly significant in Victor’s family (a trait he himself retains), he takes it upon himself to ensure Bede enjoys theirs from then on as well (usually with an outing or meal and a thoughtful gift as the basis).
- Bede finds out about the twins’ birthday (personal headcanon: February 27) through Gloria insisting they arrive in Postwick to celebrate. She admits she’s not the hugest fan of having them over at a party that’s half for her, but she recognizes her brother is head-over-heels for them at that point and how much it’d mean to him if they came. She makes it particularly clear that their attendance is not optional.
- Their first major fight since their relationship begins is spurred by Victor’s concerns that Bede is still holding him at arm’s length after over a year together (rarely expressing themselves beyond surface value, waiting for Victor to reach out more often than doing so themselves, etc). Bede attempts to play it off as being due to their busy schedule as a gym leader, but Victor sees through it fairly easily. He mostly just tries to accept it, but it leaves him feeling particularly dejected and things are fairly awkward for a bit afterward.
- After a couple weeks (and, of course, some “guidance” from Hatterene), Bede admits to holding Victor at arm’s length and starts to open up a bit about their trust and abandonment issues. Victor also apologizes for prying too much and reminds Bede that he’ll always be willing to listen when they need it.
- Bede ends up taking Victor to the post-season League banquet as their plus-one when both are around sixteen or seventeen. The media assumes he came as his sister’s (who is still very much the Champion) and that Bede invites Opal as theirs. In truth, her invitation never ceased to be issued even after she retired.
- Everyone else who is invited is well aware at this point. Raihan, Nessa, Leon, and Sonia end up debating the plausibility of their blatantly contrasting personalities working well together. Piers doesn’t bother to join in, but silently agrees with Nessa and Leon based on the stuff he’s heard about their dynamic from Marnie.
- Victor’s favorite part of the event is the amazing catering and relatively low-attention atmosphere. Bede’s favorite part is how amazing Victor looks in a suit.
- Bede and Gloria end up facing each other in the League Finals that year. When Victor goes to congratulate them afterward, the three are mobbed by press and he starts having a panic attack. Both his sister and significant other go into “angry protective mode” and attempt to angrily tell off the paparazzi.
- Gloria tries to lead the press away while Bede gets Victor into the locker room to calm down. They haven’t actually seen him in such a state since the opening ceremony of their League challenge (and even then it wasn’t this bad), mostly since he’d figured out methods to cope with his crowd-induced anxiety and misophonia by the time it would have acted up around them. They have no idea what to do for the most part, but their presence manages to help ground Victor enough to employ the calming techniques he’s had to learn over time.
- On their way out, Bede is still pissed at the paparazzi for rendering their boyfriend in such a state. Taking advantage of Hatterene’s particular skill-set, they covertly send her out to inflict them all with migraines in spite. Gloria notices from across the crowd; her respect for Bede doubles that day.
- By the time both finish growing, Victor is a couple inches taller than Bede. Their hair makes it seem closer than it actually is, but it’s still not the most drastic height difference.
- Bede eventually figures out how to incorporate their puffer coat into their gym uniform. But before that happens, they return to their locker room one day to find Victor waiting for them while bundled in it. They nearly have a cuteness-induced aneurysm.
- It’s around age seventeen when Bede learns that being nonbinary is a thing and immediately clicks with it. When they come out to Victor, he spends a full day researching gender-neutral terms to refer to them by online. He’s wary of calling them his “partner” in fear of it sounding too serious, but Bede personally approves of the term themselves.
- After growing incredibly accustomed to Victor making food for them, Bede attempts to surprise him by trying their own hand at cooking. While they have much less experience, he adores the thought they put into it and informs them that it’s surprisingly good for a first try. He offers to teach them some tricks he learned and cooking together ends up being a favorite activity of theirs from then on.
- Bede accidentally left the Vengeance Board up the first time Victor saw their room later that day. It was at that point when they realized how potentially creepy having a bunch of mementos of their boyfriend tacked to a corkboard labelled “vengeance” looked, but Victor thought it was adorable and took a picture (with a few playful snarks thrown in, of course).
- That was also the first instance of them sharing an actual bed (instead of the couch that one time), falling asleep cuddled in each others arms. They groggily bid each other good morning when they wake up, only for Opal to throw in a “good morning” of her own from her chair next to them. Just like the first instance, there was some screaming involved (and a couple empty threats on Bede’s part).
- Bede isn’t prone to using cutesy nicknames, while Victor’s nicknames for them are “Love” and “Sprite.” Hop once jokingly used the second one after seeing it as their contact name in Victor’s Rotom Phone. It took three whole minutes to fish him out of the river.
- Upon nearing his goal for gaining funds and cooking experience, Victor ultimately plans to open his restaurant in Ballonlea. The quaint, whimsical nature of the town makes it an ideal location for both his desired atmosphere and projected business (since large crowds are less likely in a smaller town, but the sights and gym challenge will attract enough customers).
- After showing Gloria, their mom, and Hop his notes to assure them he thought everything through, he brings up the idea to Bede. They’re caught off-guard at first, but after thinking it through with Opal’s help, they inform Victor that they want to help with the preparations when their schedule allows and move in above the restaurant with him when its ready.
Still not done! Like hell I’m missing out on writing the domestic fluff!

New Home
- The property the two ultimately decide on is along the route to Ballonlea Stadium. The location makes it easy for challengers and spectators to notice on their way through and, though the town is smaller anyway, it also ensures an easy trek for Bede.
- Bede attempts to ensure that the location isn’t too far from Opal’s house. They try to be more subtle in their motivations, though Victor catches on fairly quickly and assures them that it’s high on the priority list.
- Remodeling the first floor into restaurant space takes around six months. Since the construction process is primarily concentrated on the restaurant space for a while, Victor is left in charge of working with the crew for that time.
- Victor starts regularly staying up with extra logistical work after the crew leaves. Eventually, Nurse Joy finds him conked out in front of the Pokemon Center at one in the morning, having fallen asleep on his way back home for the night. His partner gives him a very stern lecture about his self-neglectful tendencies and insists he sleep at Opal’s house when he’s too exhausted to reasonably make it to Postwick or set up camp somewhere.
- Several times over the course of the next week, Bede wakes to find Victor passed out either on the couch or next to them in bed, with complete certainty that he wasn’t there when they fell asleep. Opal admits she got curious herself and waited him out one night, and Bede nearly has an aneurysm when she reveals he ended up groggily arriving at quarter to two. Victor gets an even sterner lecture than last time as soon as he wakes up.
- From then on, Bede makes a habit of heading to the site as soon as they close the gym. As expected, Victor is concerned about them going out of their way to help with the extra work on top of their own job. And, as expected, their stubbornness ultimately wins out in the end.
- Victor quickly learns that attempting to stay up unreasonable amounts of time is futile, as Bede can and will physically drag him away if he tries to work past eleven p.m.
- Victor is organized in the sense that he perfectly understands his system but is the only one who can. Bede quickly learns the most efficient way to go about it is to simply ask him to find or point out what they need instead of spending half an hour trying to find it themselves.
- They make a point to take at least one day off a week during the process, usually spending it with their respective families, doing their own things around Galar, or hanging out with Gloria, Hop, and Marnie.
- Most of the work on the second floor living space is saved for the League’s off-season so Bede has more time to get involved. Not much is changed from the standard Ballonlea interior design, aside from moving the living room stuff upstairs and a couple personal touches.
- Victor insists they keep the Vengeance Board in their room, adding his own mementos of Bede to it that he’s kept over the years.
- The living space only takes half the time of the first floor to prepare, since converting the first floor into a restaurant was more complicated. Both are around twenty when the process is completed and they’re finally ready to move in.
- Bede helps with the restaurant’s employee-hiring process at their own insistence. Victor’s ends up with a case of déjà vu from how similar their methodology is to Opal’s when he challenged her gym puzzle.
- They invited their friends and families to the unofficial pre-opening the day before the restaurant is open to the public. Gloria ensures Raihan is among those who show up, knowing he’ll have the most success spreading the word through his social media.
- When everyone leaves for the night, Bede takes care of both of their Pokemon and orders a pizza for their own dinner so Victor can take a much-needed break after catering for everyone at once.
Domesticity
- Victor sets up a small TV in the restaurant set to the League channel. His attention will occasionally wander to it whenever one of Bede or Marnie’s matches plays.
- The Ballonlea Stadium and restaurant are usually closed on the same days. Victor and Bede’s relationship still isn’t public, so the common theory is that the restaurant follows the schedule since it uses the stadium to draw in customers. A couple of the employees manage to connect the dots though.
- Neither of them are full-blown morning people. The closest to being one is Bede, but only because they can will themselves out of bed faster. Victor usually has an easier time getting up once Bede is up and about.
- On the occasion Victor still can’t bring himself to get up, Bede enlists the help of his Boltund to lick his face till he’s awake.
- Victor usually makes breakfast while Bede is in charge of coffee. Strangely enough, Victor’s Inteleon has taken to drinking it too.
- Bede is the resident blanket-hog, since they need warmth to sleep. Victor manages to avoid being affected by it by being the self-proclaimed “resident Bede-hog” and clinging to them like a Komala more often than not.
- Victor’s clinging habits have earned him the role of big spoon more often than not. Bede refuses to openly acknowledge this and Victor only brings it up in private to playfully tease them.
- Gloria got them a queen-sized weighted blanket as a housewarming gift, since Victor’s old one wouldn’t accommodate them both.
- On the occasion Hop is working in the Ballonlea area, he’s invited to crash on their couch.
- When Gloria learns about this arrangement, she extends the offer to herself and just shows up one night. She claims it’s mostly to mess with Bede, but it’s also partially because she misses living with her brother.
- Due to Victor’s nature as a mediator, the two don’t have full-blown fights often, and when they do, they usually don’t last longer than two or three days. Gloria’s short-lived “invasion,” as she and Bede refer to it, was the cause of one of the longer ones, as Bede were fairly upset that Victor was just letting her barge in basically unannounced, while Victor was upset by Bede’s behavior towards his sister. When Gloria finds out, she ends up feeling guilty about it. In a rare move for her, she sincerely apologizes to the two and admits her true motivation behind showing up.
- Bede is the most ticklish of the two. If you don’t think Victor takes advantage of this at least a couple times, you’re horribly mistaken.
- Hop offers to watch the restaurant for a day or two so they can have time off for their anniversary. They spend it camping in the Slumbering Weald after a quick visit to Victor’s old home in Postwick.
- Victor starts growing plants that he finds interesting or ingredient-worthy around the house. A number of leaves and vines can be seen spilling out the second-floor windows from outside.
- Bede doesn’t collect anything, but they can regularly be seen caring for the local wild Pokemon that tend to hang out near the restaurant. They’ve managed to learn all of them in the time they’ve lived in town.
- Bede usually takes the longest to get ready, as they’re generally fussier about their appearance. Victor mostly just tidies up and throws on comfy clothes.
- After one of them has a rough day, a favorite de-stressor activity of theirs is cuddling on the couch and watching the soft colors of Ballonlea’s bioluminescent mushrooms through the window.
- Victor suggests dancing around the living room or the closed restaurant in the mushroom light a few nights. Bede doesn’t get it at first, but once they try it they end up enjoying it a lot (they still call Victor a mushy sap, of course, but Victor knows they mean it in a good way).
- Victor has an entire album on his Rotom Phone dedicated to pictures he’s taken of or with Bede. A number are candid shots of them in instances where Victor decided they looked particularly adorable (like the time he found them caring for an injured Phantump) or hot (like the time the wind from a Dynamax attack hit them just right and made their now longer hair look so freaking majestic). Others are more... “private” ones Bede has sent him themselves.
- Bede has grown accustomed to Victor’s holiday enthusiasm by now. And now that they live together, they have essentially no escape from joining his festive spirit. They end up coming to the Stadium wearing a mistletoe earring a couple times in December, though the Gym Trainers know better than to pry.
Coping
(WARNING: This part delves a tad further into Bede’s abandonment issues and general grieving process. If you aren’t a huge fan of this stuff or it hits a bit too close to home, I’d advise moving past. If you ARE a fan of this stuff, good for you. Hope you enjoy.)

First Year
- Both of them are fairly reserved early into their relationship. Bede’s trust issues are still swirling around their already emotionally-stunted mind at full force, while Victor is naturally cautious and tries to avoid scaring them away by slowly easing them into the various stages of their relationship.
- It takes a solid month for them to start holding hands. Bede notices Victor repeatedly glancing at their hand during one of their training-session lunch breaks and just sighs and grabs Victor’s hand. He freaking lit up at that.
- It’s around that time that Bede (reluctantly) informs Opal of their relationship. She smugly admits she figured it out weeks ago. Bede locks themselves in their room and informs Victor. Bede is offended by how hilarious he finds the news.
- Even so, Opal is surprisingly supportive for her age. She even takes the opportunity to inflict more tough love on Victor and lovingly tease Bede about him.
- Bede finally decides to formally apologize to Hop for how they treated him. They still aren’t the best at expressing it, but Hop understands them enough to know that they mean it and forgives them. When he tells Victor and Gloria, Victor is extremely proud of Bede’s growth, while Gloria takes a solid week to be convinced she didn’t dream Hop telling her.
- Victor gets in the habit of sending Bede a quick text everyday to ask how their day is going during the League season. They try to keep their enjoyment of it under wraps, but Opal spots them smiling at their Rotom Phone every so often and asks about what they’re looking at (Bede always either tries to play it off or hide it. They think it works, but it never does). Marnie ultimately notices it too when they read/respond to one after a meeting of the gym leaders, though she doesn’t say anything.
- For their first official non-training-day date, the two spend the afternoon wandering around Circhester. Bede isn’t the hugest fan of the cold (I mean, have you SEEN that puffer coat they always wear?), but the city is known for being one of the most popular date locations in Galar and their natural sense of competition takes over. Victor keeps trying to catch snowflakes on his tongue, which Bede finds insanely adorable.
- Their lower cold tolerance starts to kick in as the sun sets and Victor drags them to the area just outside the Hero’s Bath for warmth. They watch the sunset from there and ultimately have their first kiss on the way back to the train station.
- Victor’s ringtone for Bede is “Lemon Boy” by Cavetown. Bede just uses their battle theme as a default ringtone and doesn’t bother getting special ones.
- Bede secretly enjoys Johto-Pop. Victor is fairly surprised when he accidentally finds out and pinkie-promises not to tell anyone (the pinkie-promise was not Bede’s idea, though it secretly amuses them that Victor still uses it as a legitimate means of trust as a teenager).
- Bede still stores Victor’s League cards and the apology from Rose on the vengeance board, along with a couple of notes he put in the meals he still occasionally drops off for testing. In spite of the board no longer being used for its namesake, Bede still does not change the name.
- Marnie ends up just (accurately) assuming the two are dating, stating her observation casually in conversation when the subject of Bede comes up. Gloria laughs at the idea until Victor’s awkward reaction confirms Marnie’s suspicions to the others.
- Gloria and Hop are fairly surprised to find out about their relationship. Hop slowly begins to realize it in hindsight, while Gloria just gawks in confusion and asks her brother if he got hit on the head or something. Marnie’s just chill about it and silently supports their relationship since she can see the positive effects it seems to be having on both of them (which leads Gloria to ask if she got hit on the head).
- Needless to say, Gloria and Hop head to Ballonlea immediately to give Bede one hell of a shovel-talk. The two corner them after their gym closes with the crowned Legendary wolves in tow. Marnie is left in charge of keeping Victor from interfering (which she easily accomplishes by having her Grimmsnarl restrain him and chatting with her immobile friend to pass the time while she keeps watch).
- When Gloria gives Marnie the okay to let Victor go, he goes to Ballonlea himself to check on Bede. He finds them training in Glimwood Tangle, clearly still a bit rattled from whatever the hell Gloria ended up threatening them with. They deny being scared by her, which Victor knows is a lie because Gloria could easily intimidate a Gyarados if she tried. He informs them they don’t need to hide their emotions around him, but ultimately concedes and offers to make dinner for them and Opal as an apology.
- Due to Bede’s job as a gym leader and Victor regularly committing to help those he met around the region when they need it, they only have time for official dates a couple times a month. Their typical date activities involve revisiting/hiking various locations and routes, watching movies or marathoning shows together, challenging the Battle Cafes, and training/playing with their Pokemon.
- Victor and Gloria head to train on the Isle of Armor around ten months after he and Bede get together. The twins keep in touch with their mom and friends while they’re gone and Victor ends up calling Bede every Saturday evening. During the call a couple weeks before the two return, he ends up telling Bede he loves them for the first time.
- The result is fairly awkward, with Bede not entirely sure how to process the admission and Victor’s anxiety kicking in and reflexively hanging up. He ends up telling Gloria what happened and, after a quick sisterly laugh at his moment of gay panic, she helps comfort his anxiety and uses their adventures around the Isle to distract him from his tendency to overthink.
- The twins return from the Isle a day before Victor and Bede’s anniversary. He ends up enlisting Opal’s help to let him into her house so he can set up a romantic surprise dinner for them. She loves the idea and, as a proud adoptive-grandmother figure/devoted shipper, demands he send her a picture of them in exchange for her assistance.
- Bede nearly attacks Victor when they realize someone is in the house when they get back from the gym, but Hatterene recognizes him and his Pokemon’s emotional signatures and informs them it’s safe before they can accidentally blind their boyfriend with Dazzling Gleams.
- The two thoroughly enjoy the meal (Bede admitting it’s one of the best things Victor’s ever made) and end up cuddling on the couch after doing the dishes together. Bede finally ends up returning Victor’s admission of “the L word” and he borderline melts into the couch.
- Bede ends up falling asleep first, leaving Victor to take a selfie of him kissing their forehead to send to Opal (on the condition she promises not to tease them with it). By the time she comes downstairs, both of them are passed out. She takes another picture herself and tucks them in for the night.
- Since Opal knows when Bede’s alarm goes off, she makes sure to grab a seat near the couch when it wakes the two, refusing to pass up the opportunity to have some fun with the opportunity. Needless to say, her meddling gives Bede some frustration to unleash at the gym that day.
BrattyShipping Headcanons Pt. 1
So I’ve seen a CRIMINALLY low amount of content for this ship ANYWHERE (seriously there’s maybe like five drawings and that’s it by this point), so here’s a crap-ton of headcanons for Victor and Bede’s ship. Based mostly on my characterization of Victor since both of them kinda need personalities to get fully into their dynamic.
Individual HCs
- Victor and Gloria are twins. They went on their journey across Galar at the same time with Hop. The three have been close friends since they were little kids.
- I personally characterize Victor as having social anxiety that primarily acts up around crowds, serving as a significant obstacle given the hyper-public nature of the Galar League. His primary character arc revolves around him learning to manage it.
- He got dragged into challenging the League by Hop and Gloria, the two convincing him that they were destined to challenge it when the Wishing Stars landed. Otherwise, he never actually planned or even really wanted to challenge it.
- He’s still far from a pushover, however. He shares some of Gloria’s bluntness behind his quiet nature, especially around his friends. He serves as the straight-man of the Postwick Trio, reigning in Hop and Gloria’s antics when they start to go off the rails.
- He was initially planning to become a professional chef and still holds onto that dream during the League challenge. He continues refining his cooking skills on the road. He even teaches his Pokemon how to help out in the kitchen and nicknames them all after foods or flavors.
- His starter Pokemon was Sobble, which he nicknames “Umami.” He saw a bit of himself in it when they first met and was immediately drawn to it. He also knew that Gloria and Hop’s more chaotic demeanors likely wouldn’t mesh with it well at first if it ended up with one of them.
- Bede is nonbinary. I will stand by this one till I die in the apocalypse.
- Their first Pokemon was their Hattenna. Rose gave it to them and they have the strongest bond with it.
- Rose and Opal never technically adopted them, but they looked up to both as a mother/father figure in the time each served as their mentor. Opal was much more receptive to the role and her tough-love style of teaching meshed with them really well.
Rivalry
- Bede first noticed Victor while scoping out the other League competitors during the opening ceremony. They didn’t take long to look down on him, as he was trying to stave off a panic attack at the boisterous crowd watching them. This impression added to their surprise when Rose told them he was one of the trainers endorsed by the Champion after the ceremony.
- When Bede challenged Victor in Galar Mine, they were initially caught off-guard by Victor not being the spineless pushover they expected. Victor didn’t pay much mind to their smug attitude beyond taking their battle seriously from the start.
- Victor’s opinion of Bede was somewhere from neutral to mildly irked until he read their League Card and learned about their past. He started to understand the stock they put into their endorsement and empathize, but still didn’t particularly enjoy them much beyond finding it amusing to see through their pride.
- Victor and Gloria were both reasonably pissed when they found out about what Bede said to Hop. Gloria moreso due to her, as the other two have described it, “borderline feral” tendencies. Victor’s opinion of Bede still considerably soured, but he mostly wrote it off as “overly self-conscious jerkiness” (as opposed to Gloria’s more profane classifications) and assured Hop that Bede’s insults were just hollow insensitivity.
- He stuck around Hammerlocke for a day or two longer than the others, running into Bede as he neared Stow-on-Side. They’d just been defeated by Gloria and disqualified/disowned by Rose and in the initial stages of their grief over the event. It was only when Victor realized just how bad of a place they were in (let’s be real, they’d just been disowned for the second time and basically had everything they cared about but their Pokemon taken from them. No way it wasn’t a REALLY bad place at that point) that he decided against ignoring or snipping at them for what they did to Hop.
- After finding out the story behind the mural incident, he admitted that what Bede did was definitely a stupid mistake, but Rose was definitely WAY too harsh on them. He assured them that they shouldn’t discredit themselves or lose hope just because of what happened and had them send out Hattrem to monitor their emotional state for safety. It was primarily thanks to Victor’s help that they regained their cocky attitude by the time he and Gloria ran into them again in Hammerlocke.
- He and Gloria both witnessed Opal ambushing/borderline abducting Bede and taking them on as her successor. He attempted to reign in his sister’s spiteful snarking when they first ran into them and was glad they seemed to be back to their old self. While Gloria was mostly amused by the prospect of them having to deal with Opal’s insufferable tendencies (she still held a grudge in the aftermath of the gym challenge. Victor watched her go borderline ballistic at the quiz from the stands), Victor was mostly glad they were getting a second chance. Though he was definitely amused by the idea of their dynamic too.
Part Two coming really soon.
