Dear Gus,
We celebrated Papou’s birthday at North Bar tonight with friends. You loved eating Brussels sprouts and fried chicken gizzards. We had a hard time keeping you in your high chair, so Mom and I took turns taking you outside to walk up and down the sidewalk. At one point, you and I walked down to the bookstore and you pointed at a picture of Oprah and said, “Mama?” (You call all women Mama and all men Dada.)

NOTE TO SELF: Solid choice. I used to think the chicken was the way to go here, but that’s just not true. At some point they switched birds, I think, and they thickened up their beef patties. Stick with the burgers for a while because they get it done.

MENU DESCRIPTION: 8oz beef patty soaked all night in Jim’s Prime Rib Secret Marinade, homemade creamy horseradish, maplewood bacon, provolone cheese, lettuce & tomato
NOTE TO SELF: Solid marinade on that burger. The description leaves off the fried mushroom that was on that thing. It needed more of those. By far the best burger I’ve had here.

Kyle invited me, you, Mom, and Yiayia to North Bar this morning for their shoot of the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” The producers interviewed us about what we liked at North Bar, but we’re probably just going to make the B-roll. Either way, it was a fun way to support my friend, and have a chicken-sandwich-and-beer breakfast. Everyone thought you were the cutest and most well-behaved toddler they’d seen. You were fascinated by the cameras and lighting, but you generally stayed quiet as long as we were feeding you sweet potato fries.

Menu description: Hand battered chicken breast, provolone, house smoked spiced sauce, lettuce, tomato, brioche bun.
The pork rinds were slightly overcooked and hard. The sandwich was good, though messy as hell because the “house smoked spiced sauce” is straight-up cheese dip.

My high school friend Kyle and another guy we went to high school with opened a bar in Park Hill called North Bar. Despite the strong grip your mother and I still have on sobriety, we stopped in for dinner tonight and ate at the bar. It’s good to see Kyle doing well, and it’s good to see booze in Park Hill. If I go missing shortly after you arrive, check this place.
