The Eve Of Northburn
Sitting in the Auckland airport with a couple of hours to wait until my flight to the adventure capital of the world, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by excitement. It will be nearly two years to the day since I last visited Queenstown. It was a truly memorable journey and the beginning of the currant chapter of my life, and I found myself there to climb Mt Aspiring. Ever since that trip, I have often thought back to that climb during tough times and remembered the views, the adrenaline, the shear satisfaction of the achievement. It also reminds me of how important it is to be physically fit and how much more enjoyable life is when I can do the things I want too.
This time, my plane ticket to Queenstown has been purchased as part of my journey to Northburn 100, a 100-mile ultra-race incorporating over 10,000m of climbing and descending. This will be my toughest race yet. In fact, it is much more than a race; it is a colossal challenge where I test my mental ability to keep my body moving.
To add to the challenge this weekend, the weather is looking cold and windy. At 3am in the morning after charging through 120 odd kilometres and enduring cold rain and wind against my cheeks, it is going to take every bit of mental strength I have to keep going; knowing at that point that I still have a marathon to complete.
Hopefully I will be writing a summary on Monday after a successful run. Stay tuned…
