EP REVIEW: Watch For Horses “Maladaptive Daydream”
The Norwalk, CA band, Watch For Horses, make you fall in love with them using their most compelling work yet from Maladaptive Daydream.
The EP opens up with “Daydream.” Lead vocalist, Ralph Tafoya, sings “Distract me when the pain runs through/ time can spin forever when it’s me and you.” It’s a story of waiting for the person you love to come back to you is told throughout the lyrics.
Even with a heavyhearted topic, the band manages to make it as carefree as possible with their dreamy melody and spirited rhythm.
After listening to just two songs of the EP, I already felt myself falling in love with their sound. It was the third track “Lost” that made me love them.
The soothing guitar riffs from Josh Borja and Jeremiah Acosta create a calming atmosphere around lyrics like; “I wanna close the door behind me forever/ and I want to stay in the bliss of my dreams forever.” Each line of this song shares a message of wanting to be free and content,something everyone (including myself) strives to feel.
The fifth track, “Charismatic Spirit”, features Watch For Horses’ most intuitive lyrics. Listeners get more personal with the band as we hear “Who am I suppose to be?/ I’ve missed you since the day you left/ I wasn’t ready for this.” The thoughts and feelings that occur during heartbreak are captured perfectly between the lines, making the song painfully beautiful.
“You were the best, Charismatic Spirit/ No one compares ‘cause you were the favorite”. Even with lines this minimal, the ache for the other person isn’t missed when hearing this. It’s difficult to not feel attached to the music when such vulnerability is shown.
I just hope that in the future the band will expose even more of their feelings in their songs.
“Envy”, is the perfect closing to an amazing EP. Each band member is heard clearly, allowing me to appreciate the music even more. The fast-paced groove makes the song so carefree and lively.
Drummer, Julian Chavez, makes it impossible to not want to get up and dance along to the bouncy beat he creates. There’s no doubt in my mind that this will easily become a fan favorite.
After listening to the EP, I know it’s only a matter of time before they play the biggest music festivals and are known by everyone in the alternative music scene.
